Description
Does anyone else remember him playing way worse offensively than he has this year. He's been a beast in all three zones. Did I forget how good he was in the year he was off? I remember him being a good penalty killer/defense-only guy, but he's been a huge addition to our defense group. I'd argue that he's been the most underrated, but extremely important reason that the Bruins have played so well.

A beast in all three zones? Cmon dude, let’s stay on planet earth.

He’s been okay. It’s a pleasant surprise.

Boston has always had top-notch pro scouting even though, at least IMO, their amateur scouting has been mediocre. Your statement is somewhat exaggerated, but their FO generally evaluates talent quite well.

I remember him moving the puck very well in the ‘18 playoffs. I think that a lot of how he’s played (as well as most of the Bruins d) is the way that the coaches have encouraged him to engage more in the offensive zone

I think you could make the exact opposite argument. Ya, they whiffed on a couple of those picks in the 15 first round, but other than that they’ve picked a lot of talent outside of the standard areas of the draft to get high end talent. The majority of trades and free agent signings Sweeney have made have been disastrous.

The only true UFA bomb for Sweeney was Backes, I'd say. I wouldn't say that he's been a "disaster" with trades, either, outside of getting precious little trade value for Hamilton relative to his youth and talent. Zboril finally becoming an NHL player helps that 2015 class a lot, especially with Lauzon also panning out.

Beleskey wasn’t a bomb? Signed him for 5 years at 3.8 i wanna say and scratched him, buried, him, and then paid for someone to take him with 50% retention.
John Moore for five years at 2.75 to be health bombed every night is pretty awful.
The Hamilton trade (I’m happy they moved him), value wise was a disaster.
We also just can’t overstate how big of a bomb the backes deal was. That was awful the second it was signed.
Reilly Smith for Jimmy Hayes who they had to buy out...disaster.
Giving up a third rounder for rinaldo might not be a disaster, but it was certainly bad.
The Nash trade was horrifically bad.
That deadline where he moved a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th for John Michael Liles and Lee stempniak was an absolute travesty.

Ya you forgot. Remember when he carried the defense almost singlehandedly in the playoffs the year before Vegas came into the league? He was so good it forced them to protect him over the other Miller.

I wouldn’t say he was bad either. That’s far too kind.
