Palmieri doesn't want to go to Canada. Try Gusev at that price

Leafs would lose the Staal for Kerfoot, i feel like Haula makes the most sense for both sides

Staal doesn't really fit. We already have some old guys to mentor and help the young guys. Kerfoot is younger and has term. Palmieri is not an option for any Canadian team.

Haula is a decent player and would provide some depth, but once the lineup is healthy the leafs don't have enough spots to keep everyone on one-way deals off the waiver wire. So they'll eventually lose someone potentially. I don't like any trades at this point to be honest.

I do agree that Staal to the leafs makes no sense

Haula has been a healthy scratch for Nashville, pretty sure they’d gladly accept the 2nd. IMO he is a no. Would love Palmieri but I always hear he doesn’t want to play in Canada. Staal would be a great add

I don't think Palmieiri agrees to sit for two weeks in a contract year.

But if he did, NJD wouldn't trade him for two AHLers and a pick. They'd probably want one of Robertson, Liljegren, Sandin instead of this package.

Totally, we will be getting Robertson and Thorton back within a week or two. Thorton will slide back up with Matthews and Marner while Robertson will join the 4th line and potentially move up the lineup. I don't see any outside additions being worth the cost with those two coming back for free.

I agree that our depth isn't depleted yet and that those two will be back soon. I suspect we will see both on the 3rd or 4th line to start though. Matthews and Marner are on fire right now and people are quick to overlook how essential a role Hyman plays in their success. I wouldn't touch that line for now.

Hyman would give a huge boost to the 3rd line and Matthews and Marner where on fire prior to Thorton's injury. Matthews has been unreal from the first game. He shot 4% in his first 5 games and then has been way higher since. They don't need Hyman but Kerfoot would certainly benefit from having him. Or JT and Nylander would as well.

Excellent point on Palmieri's mind set ... but I think by restricting the teams available, NJ may also need to accept the return will be lower. A first round pick seems reasonable.

Depends. Normally, fewer buyers means lower price. But the laws of economics don't really apply when there is one good and one seller. All you need is one buyer to set price.

I'd imagine an extension would have to be offered for Palmieri to agree. If a team says they would give him Brendan Gallagher's contract to waive, I think he has got to say yes.

(Also - FWIW, I believe he waived for Calgary last year, but trade never agreed to)

That makes sense... incidentally, if any Canadian team is interested, there's no limit to the things I'd do for a Brendan Gallagher contract ....
