I would argue he has negative value at the moment. A lot of baggage, a contract that pays 4.8m this year and next, and nobody picked him up for free on waivers.

Rangers are stuck unless they pay an asset to get rid of him

I could actually see a situation in which the Rangers retain half his salary and send a 4th round pick in exchange for future considerations. That's how low his value is.

They'd be better served to buy him out at that point, since he's under 26 its a 1/3 buyout not a 2/3

So some smart GM could come in and get Deangelo on a cheap deal and get paid a pick for it...
Seems legit

But isn't there a buyout window? I don't think you can buyout a player midseason

Yeah, but they wont pay to move him imo, it wouldnt make sense. Let him sit on the taxi squad all year and buy him out after the season.

you just need to re-acquire his partner Staal from Detroit
if they have played together there would be no problem in my opinion

Cleared waivers best bet burry him. Can’t move him nobody in there right mind would risk the public backlash.

The fact that he cleared waivers tells you that his value is negative. Nobody wants him, even for free.

Maaaaybe if Rangers retain half and add a pick they could move him as a cap dump though.

Pretend he’s not an NHL player, because he isn’t.

The only trade i could see is something reminiscent of the patriots situation with Aaron Hernandez (in NO way am i comparing the two individuals. I want to be clear about that). If i recall correctly he remained on the patriots books for a couple years because they cut him immediately. Had they waited and gone through the process of waiting for this and that, they probably could have gotten that money cleared from the books, but they viewed it as more valuable to just move on.

Maybe the rangers want to do the same? Maybe they don’t want to wait for possible termination or an off season buyout, and another team will give them a bad contract in return, and gamble that they’ll be able to terminate the deal? Who knows.

Rangers would probably just buy him out rather than retain that much for a 5th. Pens accept though

His value is relative.
No one picked him up on waivers because there aren't many teams that can afford his cap hit straight up.
The only way he gets moved is if there is another team that has a player they don't want with a similar cap situation.
At the end of the day, the Rangers aren't going to be held hostage in a trade because there is no incentive to move him.
They are one of the most cash rich teams in the league so the $4.8M means very little to them.
They bury him until June 15th and buy him out - the buyout is pennies...

Best case, they bury him - he doesn't see ice and asks for a mutual contract termination.

No way that Tone walks away from his money...no mutually agreed contract termination. Agreed that the likeliest path is that he gets to sit back, take a much needed vacation, continue podcasting and collecting his paychecks. Then gets bought out by Rangers in the off-season.

Or he gets traded to the Pens apparently. But I don’t see that likely without GMJR there to make that poor decision.

there is only like 4 teams that could technically "add him for free" - not getting claimed on waivers means nothing.

2 years is a long time to not play - if the Rangers bury him that long he will never see the ice in the NHL again.
if he mutually terminates and finds another team to sign him, he can extend his career...

i'm not saying one or the other will happen, i'm just saying if the guy wants to extend his NHL career, ending things with the Rangers is the best scenario for him.
Gorton is on record saying he will not play in the organization again...

Personally I'd prefer to just keep him out of the lineup for the duration of his contract to save the pick and avoid a buyout penalty (I know the penalty is small but we have a lot of young players due for raises soon)
