Massive rebuild

Description
SJ has a very disappointing 2020-21 season, ends up with another TOP3 pick like last year and decide to go for a rebuild. It's high time. New GM, new coach, new roster. Let it go.

---

Expansion draft
SJ protects
7F: Couture, Hertl, Meier, Kane, Labanc, Donato, Gambrell
3D: Karlsson, Simek, Middleton
1G: Korenar

Seattle picks: D Brent Burns, with SJ agreeing to compensate on the said pick.

It can't actually be a trade involving Burns since he could veto it via his NTC. However, if SJ and SEA agree to a deal where SEA picks him as the ED pick, and SJ compensate them for it, then it's a horse of a different color. The end result is more or less the same, the means to do it are tad diverse. Only clear difference is that SJ can't retain any salary, which means that the compensation they need to hand out is a tad more substantial.

Has Marleau back to the leafs become a meme or something? why on earth would they want him?

I'm not sure that NYR would trade so much for potentially only one season of Hertl -- but this is interesting to think about. If you do want a full rebuild, you do have assets (Labanc, Hertl, etc) that could bring in some pretty nice returns -- especially if you're taking on some less palatable contracts.

Very easy no from the Oilers. Labanc is good, but I don't see how he's worth one of our top forward prospects and a 1st. Can't really rationalize spending those assets on him

but we just have so much of it that its not even worth spending an asset on. I'd rather play Engvall, Boyd, Robertson, Joey Anderson, etc. to be honest.

NYR rejects that's way too much for them to give up, especially when Hertl contract is up next year and they also have to resign Zibanejad, Kakko, and Fox and then Lafreniere and KeAndre Miller in 2023

I understand the money issue, but I think the value is pretty apt. There's only one guaranteed NHL asset, the prospects are playing in Europe in changing roles...no real guarantees on them being the real deals. The picks are also conditional.

Frankly though I don't think the money will be an issue either. In two years time all but the significant contracts have expired. And based on how the rookies, aside from Fox, have played recently, they aren't in for huge raises either for now.

            He doesn't. His team sucks.

Sadly though after this trade nothing changes on that department.

Why in the world would a rebuilding team trade their best RW prospect for compensation? Seattle either takes Burns for nothing or not at all. Burns is still a good player.

If LE could be had for a 1st as compensation, the Kings would have already made that trade.

Huge overpay for Herlt, that 1st could be another lottery pick, have you been paying attention to the Rangers this season?

Why in the world would a rebuilding team trade their best RW prospect for compensation? Seattle either takes Burns for nothing or not at all. Burns is still a good player.

If LE could be had for a 1st as compensation, the Kings would have already made that trade.

Huge overpay for Herlt, that 1st could be another lottery pick, have you been paying attention to the Rangers this season?

He put conditions on the pick. Its a pretty terrible offer considering the pick is only 11th at best

I want to see this top 9 eventually:
            Dahlen Couture Wiesblatt
            Leonard Hertl Guenther
            Donato Robins Lablanc

Assuming you guys draft Guenther. Where it starts to get complicated is on the blueline and goaltending.

11th at best in 2021, no limits in 2022.

That is if NYR decides to keep the pick. It could be higher than 10th in 2021 too.
