I like the Detroit trade.

Yzerman has already said that he wants 2021 picks not later, Detroit doesn't need Kerfoot and the picks are too late. Therefore Detroit would decline the deal.

When did he say this as an absolute? He said he wants more picks but I don’t recall him ever saying he only wants 2021 picks in any negotiations this season.

Yzerman said at one of his press conferences, That he was just concentrating on picks one year at a time. But if he could get multiple picks for some players he'd definitely take them. I mean it makes no sense to deal players for picks that are still 1 to 2 years away.

Bennett is a 4th liner... Dermott alone is probably an overpay considering his cap hit. No one's going to touch Deangelo, for good reason. The Detroit trade makes sense for the Leafs, although a 2nd and 3rd seems like a lot for 2 expiring bottom-6 quality vets.

He already has 3 second rounders for 2021 and he still would have Nemeth, Merrill, Flippula, and Helm on expiring contracts that could be flipped. Nemeth I’d wager could return a second rounder if his play continues or improves while the others will be mid to late picks. He can also leverage his cap space to retain in a three team deal for futures.

I don’t recall him ever saying he was intended on focusing on a single year but rather loading up on as many draft picks as possible which is different. This scenario he gets two future second rounders in some good looking drafts while still being able to accumulate draft picks. If the difference is a third rounder in 2021 vs a second rounder in 2022 it should be a no brainer decision.

Spezza is already on the team and no I have no interest in Glendenning. He would be hard pressed to make the Leafs roster.b

The reason I like like it is it gives Detroit a 2nd forward meeting the criteria to leave unprotected. Add that to the 2 2nds its not bad.
