For the sake of total rebuild

Description
Assuming that this season is going to be a total failure, maybe they'll consider rebuilding the whole organisation, Ottawa style. Based on how they're built for now, it's unlikely they'll have any kind of success with their current core, after all.

Fire coach Q. He's just useless in a young, retooling team.

---

Summing the trades

VGK trade
- using the Karlsson trade as a bit of an example, after all he's the latest franchise caliber player that has been dealt as a pending UFA. I'd argue Barkov would carry more value than EK due to his position, and the fact there hasn't been such huge rumors about him wanting to leave the team as there were with EK.
- VGK gains themselves the clear cut 1C they've been lacking for.
- FLA gains important pieces to base their rebuild on.

COL trade
- I don't think there's many examples of TOP5 players of his own position being dealt to futures with two years left, but I do think Huberdeau is worth a top prospect, mid-6 player and a first rounder.
- COL, being a contending team, could form probably the best line of modern hockey for two years in Hubby-MacKinnon-Rantanen. Also their defense is deep, meaning Byram might be expendable.
- FLA needs a young star D-man to build their defense around. Byram might be the best option in the market.

TOR trade
- it's a bit touch and go, but I'm banking on two things
1) TOR loses once again early in the playoffs and finally decides that their approach of paying 4 forwards half of their cap won't bring them success.
2) Ekblad asks for trade after another disappointing season, and he has seen enough rebuilding throughout his career, he's a first round pick after all.
- making a huge hockey trade in swapping Ekblad and Marner to one another, and adding two good prospects from each team to swap as well to make the trade position wise somewhat even.

PHI trade
- adding 2 players from each team that might need a change of scenery.
- PHI adds a pick due to saving a bit money in this exchange

CGY trade
- this deal is made during the 2020-21 trade deadline.
- FLA adds future picks, CGY adds depth assets to bolster their roster.

STL trade
- if Hoffman and/or Schwartz walks, they need a winger. Vatrano could be a realistic option.

WSH trade
- WSH needs to create cap to re-sign Ovechkin and Vrana
- Panik is a bit of a cap dump, FLA as a rebuilding team could take the guy in.
- They gain a young 2G and a pick as compensation.

CAR trade
- Canes need a physical RHD for playoff depth. They don't really have those.

I agree with that, but I don't Byram is a top prospect as much as a Top 4 D he has been logging some serious minutes since his debut. Granted the last game was a bit lopsided. Timmons 1st or 2nd and a B prospect seems reasonable.

    Quoting: Internetkingz
I can see that point, I think the aspect that Colorado view Byram as untouchable is the point of contention. Let's revise it as 1st and 3rd + Timmons or Compher.

Those are pretty weak offers for Huberdeau that wouldn't really come close to getting a conversation started.

Florida have every right to ask for a high end bluechip prospect coming back for Huberdeau, especially with retention, but Sakic should hold on to Byram. Just because you have the assets to make a trade and the ask is fair doesn't mean that you have to make the trade.

I think fundamentally Timmins is not good enough of a prospect to deal Huberdeau for at all.

It'd really have to be an elite level prospect.

If Byram is as untouchable as it gets, the next guy I'm after from COL is Girard. His long-term contract is interesting from FLA standpoint.

Naturally I'm not including Makar here.

Sakic spent the better part of a decade trying to build a good D group virtually from scratch, and knows how hard it is to do it and how valuable good young Dmen are. As such I highly doubt he's going to break up the D group he's built just as it's finally taken shape.

Rantanen is not even close to being able to do what Landy does just because of his size, plus you'd be asking a guy to move away from what he does best to something alien to him. Not good asset management. The line is already arguably the best in the league so why mess with what works? If you honestly think Rants could do Landy's job you're either a) clueless about hockey, b) don't watch the Avs much or c) both.

What is it that Landeskog does that Rantanen can't? If anything it's Rantanen who has looked like a physical unstoppable force so far this season, not that Landeskog has been bad or anything, but Rantanen has legit claims to being the teams MVP and leads the league in goals scored to boot.

That was part of my thought process actually.

Considering that Byram has played only a handful of games for the Avs team, the team wouldn't most likely need him right now. The D group is set with Makar, Girard, Toews, Johnson, Timmins and Graves for several years to come, should it come to that.

That D core is one of the best in league without Byram in it already. So trading the guy for a top line player isn't creating any holes in your roster short-term.

But yeah I'm getting tired of this topic. Can't satisfy everyone with these offers.

I'll agree Rants has been great but I still don't see him as the mix it up, play the man kind of guy Landy is. If the Skipper can't play the puck himself he'll take the man out of the play and work it loose for someone else to take, that's where his extra apples come from for me. I can see how that probably read wrong, I meant that because Rants is so big everyone assumes he can be a Landeskog type player. It's not in his DNA to me, and it still doesn't alter the fact you're then detracting from what Rants adds to add Huberdeau. You want him to do a role he's less suited for and detract from what he does now so he's no longer a leading scorer?

Girard is a more logical guy to ask for but at best you're looking at a one for one swap, maybe the Avs adding a little, simply because of that long term contract.

They'd probably go look for options elsewhere if COL started to haggle that much.

It wouldn't do for them to get a bad deal for a top tier LW in the league.

I think if Girad is involved based on his contract - the 1st is off the table

Girad + 3rd rounder / for Huberdeau but the same sticking point comes in as Huberdeau terms is not team-friendly what so ever consider the other contracts expiring around the same time.

Naturally I'm not including Makar here.

Not a chance. FLA is not dealing TOP5 LW in the league in this manner

The original offer is Byram+1st+Compher. If I have to change Byram to Girard, I want more than 1st+ as a return.

Compher is an add on there to make the money work. Not a necessary asset to keep.
