If Klefbom is exempt from expansion draft

Créé par: hockeyconnor97
Équipe: 2021-22 Oilers d'Edmonton
Date de création initiale: 25 janv. 2021

Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
Protected:
Forwards: Mcdavid, Draisaitl, Nuge, Yamamoto, Puljujarvi, Kahun, and Benson
Defense: Nurse, Bear, Jones, With klefbom being exempt because he hasn't played a game in over 60 games if the oilers make the playoffs (still not guaranteed he is exempt but in this case we assume he is)
Goalie: Koskinen

Options for seattle:
Turris, Kassian, Skinner, Archibald, Neal.
OR they could take a pending UFA like Barrie, Larsson, or Ennis

I think they end up taking Kassian or Turris, and for this team I'll assume they take Kassian.

    why would he be exempt?
And I highly doubt Seattle takes Kassian straight up without sweeteners attached to him. They wont do oilers favours taking a cap hit they probably dont want off their books

Why do people continue to think that Klefbolm will be exempt if he is going to be able to resume his hockey career?

It would be buyer beware for Seattle but I don't get the rationale about why Oilers fans think they're just going to get an extra protection slot and then he'll magically be healed and able to re-start his career. If he'll be able to play again, he'll need protection. If his career is actually over the NHL could make him exempt if they didn't want Seattle to be able to take him.

From what I understand is he's missing the shortened season but then will be able to resume his career, so the Oilers will need to protect him or leave him exposed and Seattle can gamble on him. I realize an injury exclusion is a real thing, but you need to understand why that is a real thing and it's not to protect players that will shortly be able to resume their career.

P.S. I think your best move is just to protect 8 skaters. Nurse, Klef, Bear, Jones, McDavid, Drai, Poolparty & Yamamoto.

Nuge is probably leaving as a UFA, or can re-sign after the expansion draft. Everyone else seems really replaceable to me.

I doubt he will be, but under the expansion draft FAQ, if a player has missed a team's last 60 games are in certain cases exempt. I doubt Klefbom is exempt, but you never know.

its if they have career ending injuries, he wont be exempt and then magically be on the roster next season.
If hes exempt hes not playing next season either. Considering this was a player elected surgery to fix long term issues of his, would doubt hes exempt

I think it’s a unique situation regarding klef according to the rules technically should be exempt but this will need the league to make the call on and considering past league rulings regarding oilers don’t expect the leagues help which sucks because we don’t know what type of player klef will come back as. Will he be the guy capable of playing a solid 25 min a night or will he be damaged goods only capable of 15 min a night while missing 15-20 games a year or will we protect him only to have him come back play a handful of games before flares up again and retires. It’s a risk on many different angles.

Regarding Klefbom, "Players who do not play 40 games of the 2020-21 season OR a combined 70 games between the 2019-20 and the 2020-21 season are exempt. If Oscar Klefbom is out for the season, this will make him exempt."

    Klefbom would be exempt no?

I would be ecstatic if he was exempt! I would rather pay them to take Neal though.

If you go by the exemption guidelines to be exempt you need to have missed the previous 60 games and not meet the exposure requirements. It’s all prorated but Klefbom is missing the whole season and he meets the exposure requirements by 2 games played. He probably won’t be exempted but he legitimately also might never play again. He hasn’t had surgery or anything yet and it sounds like his only options are hoping it will get better or shoulder replacement which means he can’t play hockey anymore. They are without a doubt going 7-3. Jones is benched and they have 2 more LD that are close to playing.

I don't know where you're getting that quote from but it overlooks the following key introductory phrase: "Players with potential career-ending injuries" and miss the indicated number of games will be exempt.

I still don't know if Klefbom would be exempt or not. This was the first quote that came up when I searched, "Is Klefbom exempt from expansion draft?"
