Erik Johnson's listings show him as having a contract with a modified No Trade Clause AND a No Movement Clause. This is delineated on both his Player page and on the Colorado Avalanche Team page as "M-NTC, NMC." This is the designation for each year of his contract, so apparently that does not mean that a NMC kicks in for a particular season. Below the yearly figures we find the following notation: "Clause Details: Lists 19 teams he can be traded to." That's a NTC, not a NMC, and I don't know why CapFriendly calls it a NMC. If it was a pure NMC, there would be no need for the "M-NTC" notation. Can anyone enlighten me with a citation to authority and not their personal opinion as to what this means? In particular, I'm interested in how this affects his status for the expansion draft.

Is the NMC strictly to guarantee that he can't be waived and scooped up by another team, thus voiding his NTC? Kinda like what the Lightning tried to do with Tyler Johnson?

Pretty sure the difference between a NMC and a full NTC is that a NMC means that a player can’t be placed on waivers (unless they’re being bought out) and must be protected in an expansion draft.

Edit: So Johnson can be traded to the 19 teams he has on his list, but he must be protected from Seattle and can’t be placed on waivers.

Everyone else has pretty much nailed it, but just to break it down:

NMC: Cannot be traded or placed on waivers (barring a buyout) without permission, requires expansion draft protection even when paired with a M-NTC
NTC: Cannot be traded without permission, but can be placed on waivers, does not require expansion draft protection
M-NTC: Can only be traded to particular teams as specified by the player or not traded to particular teams as specified by the player, the number of which is determined at the signing of the contract

The M-NTC can be paired with a NMC, which essentially turns the NMC into a "No Waivers Clause".

For the expansion draft, the NMC requires protection by the team, even if it is paired with a M-NTC.

Thanks!
