Description
I’ve said a lot about the laine trade but I want to say one more thing. The jets finally had the perfect mix of goal scoring, playmaking, and speed in their top 6. It’s sad the balance only lasted 1 single game.

The jets seem to want to slide another year of heinola’s elc so I sent him down

The galchenyuck trade doesn’t have to be niku, can just be a 3rd instead

Hawks pass. They don't want Appleton and a 2nd isn't nearly enough. You've appropriately put Murphy on the top pair. Make an appropriate trade for a top pair dman.

I put him on the top pair cause of size. Pionk and arguably demelo are both ahead of him in depth chart terms.

Also he’s a high end shutdown guy but that’s it. He’s no top pair d-man.

However, I can replace appleton with a different propecg such as Nathan smith? Or maybe if the jets are confident they can resign Lowry, David gustafsson? That’s about all he’s worth though tbh. Don’t really have the currency to pay 2 2nds like I originally planned so I tried to make it up with a prospect.

That's fine, someone will probably offer that, and Ottawa is likely to accept.

Hes not a #1 Dman. Ill agree with you there. No Norris's (or is it Norri???) In his future. Agreed. Thats different than top pair. His closest trade comp is Jake Muzzin. Slightly worse offensively and slightly better defensively. Cheaper cap, but OA slightly worse Dman, but barely. He was a 1st and two 2nds (in the form of prospects) it would be something a little less than that. 1st 2nd and 3rd...in either pick or prospect form.

Make it a first and drop the prospect. Hawks aren't trading him for anything less

Murphy is not a top pair d-man, but he is a very good shutdown second pair guy, and he is very important to the young (and usually porous) Hawks defense. The Hawks become a worse team by doing that trade, and the second does not have a high enough chance of giving us a player of Murphy's caliber for this to be worth it, even with the other (very meh) prospects you offered.

What more do you want Murphy to do to be considered a top par Dman? I know its a short season so far, but 5 points in 6 games. All 5v5. Mostly gets Dzone starts. Is a +3. We all know he's good defensively and plays on the PK. All on a pretty bad team.

Lol “norri”.

I think muzzin is very far ahead of Murphy tbh. Muzzin brings a lot more offence and is similar defensively. I don’t think either is really better in their own end tbh. I agree with @SociallyHawkward on his evaluation but that would be the absolute max I would pay. Tbh, if I’m paying a first I’m looking elsewhere though. For me, I went with Connor Murphy because there’s a chance we may not need to pay a 1st. However, if I need to pay a first, I’m looking at guys like severson instead.

Fair enough, though I wouldn’t classify gustafsson and especially smith as “meh”. What if we send Logan Stanley, Simon lundmark, or kovacevic instead of appleton?

Logan Stanley and kovacevic could especially develop into similar players to Murphy

It’s waaaaay too early to cite his production as a reason for him being a top pair d. Come too me when he finishes the season at 35+ points pace (over full season). For a guy that has a career high 19 points, he is not a top pair guy. He’s a good top 4 defencemen, probably even a number 3, but not top pair (ie top 2). Though I don’t classify Neal pionk as a top pair so my bar is a little high.

He's not the best skater, and while many are not entirely his fault, he is involved in a number of defensive breakdowns in the defensive zone. Also, I think a lot of his success has come because he's playing on such a terrible team, making his play look better than it truly is. I have been more of a Murphy believer than a lot of the Hawks fans on this site for the past couple years, and I think he is a very solid #3 guy, but not quite top pair.

If we're trading Murphy, I would want a prospect who can become as good as Murphy. Stanley, Lundmark, and Kovacevic may play a similar game to Murphy, but it is very unlikely that they ever become top 4 guys, at least going off of what I have read from scouts and reporters. Gustafsson is interesting, but I think his ceiling is 3rd line center, which isn't a position of need and isn't enough for Murphy. I would do it for Heinola or Samberg, but I highly doubt the Jets want that, so I don't think the trade works between the two teams.

Really thought they should've signed Galchenyuk in the offseason, could've helped the bottom 6 and moved up when/if injuries hit, Niku has little value and the Sens are flush with D prospects, he'll cost a 3rd or 4th depending on the season he has.

Think Murphy would be a good addition but that doesn't get it done, he may not be a true top pairing guy but I think he'd be good enough with Morrissey.

Now they'll go shopping for a winger after that ****ty trade if no one can step up, a winger should be cheaper to acquire then a center but Chevy loses a lot of trades so maybe not.

Should've traded Dayoff for Jarmo.
