What do you think Anaheim would accept for Gibson?

He's a top 3 goalie in his prime and signed to a great contract for over half a decade, so wouldn't come cheap.

The question is whether the difference between Grubauer and Gibson is worth giving up Byram. I'm not sure it is, as much as Gibson would be nice to have.

i think i would bite the bullet on that one. unstable goaltending has already cost the avs one playoffs.

I’m not trading Byram for anything short of an elite 1C. And given their choice ANA will want Byram because they have a stud young C prospect in Zegras, so it’s a no go.

It wasn't 'unstable' goaltending that cost us. It was injuries. Injuries to not one, but TWO of our goalies. It doesn't matter if it's Gibson or Patrick Roy in net, if they get hurt you're out of luck.

I'd say the trade starts with Grubauer and keeping Francouz as back up to Gibson.

Grubauer is a pending UFA so Anaheim wouldn't really value him at all. The only reason why he'd be included would be if there was salary cap constraints, but with just $1.3m in caphit between Grubauer and Francouz it would make more sense for Colorado to keep Grubauer themselves until he hits UFA, rather than Francouz. Unless of course Sakic doesn't feel like hunting for a backup goalie in the offseason, but I think having Gibson/Grubauer as a tandem would be much more secure for the playoffs than Gibson/Francouz.

From Anaheim's PoV I'd see it differently. Grubauer can be re-signed and beyond that they've got Miller. If they're going to let Gibson go they're going to want to at least acquire a #1, even if they're going to need to re-sign him. Even as a UFA Grubauer would have much more value in the trade than Francouz as the established guy allowing Colorado to bring down the assets they have to send pretty significantly.

That said, I don't see all that much of a difference in retaining Grubauer versus acquiring Gibson, other than Gibson being a bit younger and tied up longer. Grubauer is statistically a touch better and a former cup winner, and should be easy enough to tie up next year for a few more. Biggest issue for the Avs is if injury strikes again. Miska looks decent enough but if you're relying on any #3G to win you the cup you'd be being very optimistic. I just don't really see goaltending as a big issue for the Avs that is worth those kind of assets for what might be a tiny upgrade at best.

Overpay or not. If ANH bites on this I would still do it. Last piece before this team is a powerhouse.

Fair points. I still think Anaheim wouldn't want a guy on an expiring contract. In fact, if Avs were to include Grubauer in a deal for Gibson they'd probably just turn around and trade Grubauer for a deadline haul themselves from a playoff team who need help in net.

I agree with you about the 3rd goalie. Avs definitely have to get a better No.3. Miska isn't an NHL goalie.

four games into the follow season and the avs already had to dress their 3rd goalie. grubauer and francouz have never reached a 40 game season yet. avs goaltending is unreliable. gibson regularly plays 50+ games.

Yes but my point is that, you are talking about how grubi and francouz are injury prone... why trade away a handsome package when your getting another goalie with a similar type injury situation at least for the first half of his career

Still imo it would be insanely foolish to trade Byram, it will likely be close to a decade before the Avs have the opportunity to add a young talent like him.

I'm not in favor of the trade.. Gibson's a beast but to valuable to ana where a trade wouldnt be worth it to the avs in the long run
