Graves for Copp - COL

Créé par: Richard88
Équipe: 2020-21 Avalanche du Colorado
Date de création initiale: 23 janv. 2021
Publié: 23 janv. 2021
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Transactions
COL
  1. Copp, Andrew
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2022 (WPG)
Détails additionnels:
Winnipeg now have Scheifele/Dubois/Stastny/Lowry down the middle, so Copp is a bit redundant there as a C.

With 2C filled, their biggest need is LHD. Graves showed last season that he is capable of playing in the top 4 and would be a solid addition to roll with Morrissey/Graves/Heinola on the left.

Losing Graves would be manageable for Colorado since Byram has looked money in his first two games. Going forward Toews/Girard/Byram would hold down the left side, and Makar/Johnson/Timmins on the right.

Winnipeg add a pick due to the fact that top 4 D are generally more valuable than 3rd liners. Graves is also cost-controlled for another 3 years, whereas Copp is an RFA at the end of the season.
WPG
  1. Graves, Ryan
Détails additionnels:
Avs fill the hole at 3C by adding a guy with solid two-way play who's basically the center version of Calvert.

Copp might not produce a lot thanks to his stone hands, but he does a lot of good on the ice overall and has great analytics.

Colorado would be looking for a lot more than Copp for Graves.

Top 4 D are worth more than an average 3C.

You gotta view it from a expansion draft point of view. If they keep graves he’s almost 100% being selected in the expansion draft. Colorado would be smart to try and get some assets. I doubt they move him in division, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him traded this offseason.

I think it’s fair, I really like Copp. But I don’t think Colorado needs a Copp with the amount of guys they already have. They have like 4-5 3rd liners

It does feel a little bit like a slight downgrade quality-wise, but 3C is becoming a big issue for Colorado. Yes we have do have a lot of 3rd line calibre guys like Nichuskin, Compher, Donskoi, Calvert, and Jost, but none of these guys are good at C. Copp might not be that guy, but Avs really do need an addition at 3C, either as a rental or with Newhook joining sooner than expected.

The Boone Jenner ship has sailed now that Columbus traded a C because they can't afford to reduce their already limited C depth further. Domi/Jenner/Texier isn't great.

nah, expansion draft or not, they aren't taking pennies on the dollar
They are going to lose someone, let them take Graves, doesnt matter who. Its a good player no matter what they do. Just take their selection and move on.

Or have teams not learn their lesson from what the Ducks, Panthers, Wild, even the Jets giving up a 1st just to keep Toby Enstrom for 1 year.
Let them take their guy and move on

I never said they should take this deal, but they shouldn’t just lose Graves for nothing..... that’s all I said. I think Colorado would be smart to move Graves at the TDL for a really nice package. Wouldn’t you rather get a 1st and a prospect or a nice prospect and a pick than nothing? If you say no you’re actually a brick wall.

Avs are trying to win now, only losing one of Graves Compher or Donskoi in expansion draft is better than losing 1 to a trade like Graves and then another being selected in the draft. Creating 2 holes isn't ideal

1st and prospects are nice but those dont help the Avs win in the next 2 years. A lot can happen bw now and the draft so the idea of "dont want to lose him for nothing" is premature.

But regardless you are losing someone for nothing that is how this thing goes for deep teams, a good player will be scooped up so why fight the process, GM who tried to be smarter to the XD lost out in the end

That’s true, I guess in my eyes they can afford to lose a Compher or Donskoi for nothing as it doesn’t hurt as much as losing Graves for nothing.

The depth is there to replace whatever guy is picked, I just think its easier to plan knowing 1 of those 3 will be picked and knowing 3m will be coming off the books to plan extensions with

Would love to be able to move graves for a haul and get a guy like Donskoi off the books so they have fun cap space to play with, but that could be playing with fire

Honestly think that’s the ideal situation. Graves is moved for a haul, and Donskoi gets picked. Frees up cap and they can add to their cupboards of prospects. Could snag a solid f prospect that’s exempt for Graves.

absolutely the ideal situation but teams wanting to move guys for the fear of losing them is going to be pretty plentiful during the offseason, guys will be moved for less bc there are just going to be so many options out there for teams who are willing to buy before the XD.

Thats why it could be playing with fire

I was thinking about a Graves trade at the deadline, probably where he’ll have the most value.

That is indeed where Graves would have the most value, but that's also where he'd have most value to Colorado as well.

After trading Cole it would be risky to trade Graves as well, unless we're getting a good player who can help us win right now.

Donskoi getting picked by Seattle would be a dream scenario for Colorado. He's a decent player, but his east-west game just hasn't worked that well in Colorado. $3.9m in capspace would also be extremely handy next offseason.

Sakic won't be moving Graves for a prospect though, unless it's a player who's NHL ready and can help the team win right now.

The risk with doing that is that Copp would take a protection spot from Jost, meaning that Seattle would have the option of picking Jost instead of Compher/Donskoi/Graves. That wouldn't be ideal given that we could really do with one of those $3m+ coming off the books.
