Kulak is a very good two way D. I’d say he’s a solid #4. Played very well with Petry last season.

I am torn on this one because Kulak is worth about a 3rd, maybe a 2nd. But the offer is about right. The problem is, MTL finally has the team to make a long playoff run and they have plenty of prospects and picks, so the timing might be off on this.

So many people say this but if this were true, Montreal would not have gone out and got Edmundson to play solid D next to Petry!

Edmundson leads entire team in hits, blocked shots and in plus/minus. When I coached (23 years Junior A, QMJHL, OHL), I always wanted two dig heavy D-men to do the dirty work, PK, block shots, fight, hits. Most fans think they are boring or no good, yet they are loved by their teammates and coaches.

He leads the team in hits and blocked shots because he never has the puck and continues to get hemmed in his own end. He probably is a great teammate, he still has a negative impact while he’s on the ice

oh boy. I felt like deleting this but here goes. That quote is rubbish and here is why. Carolina plays a man d-zone coverage which is not in Edmundson's favour at all. He needs a team like St-Louis that plays a zone coverage, which Montreal plays. In a zone coverage Edmunson will have much better numbers and will do better.

I had a lengthy discussion on this topic at the 2007 High Performance coaching seminar as an invited guest. It is called a ghost roster, you cannot have 6 offensive d-men, or 6 defensive d-men. You have to break down your positions and from side to side. So usually if your #1 most offensive D is in your two hole on the right, in this case Weber, then your number 3 D should be a left handed smooth skating D with some offence. This is where Kulak gets screwed because MTL has Petry sitting behind Weber in the 4 hole, So that means your #3 needs to be a defensive d-man, which is exactly why MTL identified this after watching the playoffs and went out and got Edmundson to play with Petry. If no injuries occur they will play together all season.

Now where things can get messy is with youngster Romanov. We still do not know his ceiling. He certainly looks like a top 4 D and with time will end up there.
