They're also likely the top-2 teams in the west, so why would they "help" each other? Doubt you see a trade between the two of them for the foreseeable future

This is horrific for Colorado.

Grubauer is a much better goalie than Fleury right now, with less than half the caphit. No way Avs should do this. There's absolutely no need to downgrade Johnson either, he's still an important part of the D group.

Grubauer > Fleury
Johnson > Holden

The question is why? Why would COL do this?

Johnson's NMC regarding the ED is the only possible explanation coming to mind, and I do think he's just gonna waive it if COL promises to keep him there for the cup hunt.

What a train wreck of a trade for the avs

Looks like a pretty bad trade for Colorado to me. Obviously Fleury has a better track record than Grubauer since he's been the starting goalie for multiple cup wins but over the past year or so, Grubauer has put up better numbers and looks better than Fleury with the eye test too. Johnson is significantly better than Holden and is an alternate captain on Colorado. After trading Cole, he's basically their only veteran defenseman left. Plus, Colorado is losing money. Don't see any reason why they'd downgrade at both positions and lose money.

I don't think Grubauer is going anywhere anytime soon. Johnson is going to get squeezed out at some point esp if the cap stays flat - but one thing to factor in is how much did Johnson being out hurt in the playoff bubble
