Description
Tried to help teams while upgrading picks. Let me know if value is off I will consider adjusting.

Edmonton had no second or 3rd in 2021 so they get 1 in each round for a 22 second.
Ottawa had no 4th or 5th in 21 so I targeted a 3rd in 22. Maybe I should have stuck with a 4th but we need to get some value back.
Pittsburg no 3rd or 4th in 21 so target was 22 3rd
Vancouver no 22 3rd so traded Ottawa's high 3rd and Pittsburgh's mid to late 3rd for Vancouver's late 2nd.
Ava no 22 2nd so traded 2 mid 2nds for late 1st (wasn't sure if this made sense or not value wise)
Reason for trades was our prospect pool is already deep and we are getting close to max contracts and reserve list players so we free up some of our picks to help other teams who are short on picks while at the same time we move up in the 22 draft.

fair enough, I just thought it would be more palatable if Edmonton gets in both rounds they have no picks in as opposed to just one.

Reasons the Avs consider it

1. They have no 2nd round picks and those 2nds should be only 15-25 pick later (maybe not even that many)
2. Their 1st would be 25-31
3. The drop off from 25th to 50th OVA is not that much in this draft

Yeah I was not positive that they would care about being out of 2 mid rounds when they already have a ton of early round picks. However there is that outside chance that a 4th or 5th becomes a Point or Gallagher type pick.

Pittsburgh is not "trading down for 5th's" at all. They are getting in 2 middle rounds that they have no picks in in 2021 for 1 pick in 2022. Sure the pick is 1 round earlier in 22 but the Pens need to restock their prospect pool as it is running pretty thin. I don't think this trade is that bad for the Pens at least not as bad as you make it out to be.

I don’t know if Edmonton does this. The 2022 1st will probably be gone on a goalie trade and my suspicion is Edmonton goes off the board and picks a goalie with their first this year.

RIght, they trade down in a better draft to get two later picks in a worse one....makes total sense.

What’s the point of getting mad at someone’s valuation of a mid-round draft pick?

Reasons Avs decline out of hand:

Trading the 1st for 2nd round picks means that they have no 1st rounder. So you're solving one problem but creating another.

A 1st round pick has A LOT more weight in trade negotiations at the deadline than 2 2nd's do. If Sakic is interested in Taylor Hall for example and offered a package involving 2 2nd's (and more), Buffalo would obviously reject that and take the offer with a 1st round pick. Teams lacking a 1st round pick have often been priced out of trades at the deadline.

The drop off from late 1st to late 2nd is actually much bigger than you claim. Check out any 'draft pick value chart' and you'll see the relative difference in value. A player drafted in the 1st round (even late) has twice as big a chance of making it in the NHL than someone drafted in the 2nd round. Only 25% of 2nd round picks become NHL'ers, with as low as 10% in the late 2nd.

There are situations where trading down is warranted, but such trades usually only involve trading down 4-5 picks maximum. Certainly not moving down 15-25 picks from the 1st round. That's unheard of.

So in summary, it's a swift and easy decline from Sakic.

Ultimately, it all depends on the draft and how deep the prospect pool is. If Joe and company like a guy in the 25-31 range, they'll take him. It's that simple.

Not at all, look at recent draft-day trades. At the 2020 draft alone:

Detroit traded 45 for 51 + 94, so a 4th to drop 6 spots in the 2nd round
Toronto traded 44 for 59 + 64, so a high 3rd to drop 15 spots in the 2nd round
San Jose traded 34 for 38 + 100, so a 4th to drop 4 spots in the 2nd round

2019:

San Jose traded 41 for 48 + 82, so a 3rd to drop 9 spots in the 2nd round
Carolina traded 37 for 44 + 83, so a 3rd to drop 7 spots in the 2nd round
Nashville traded 34 for 45 + 65, so a high 3rd to drop 11 spots in the 2nd round

This trade (est):

Edmonton trades 50 for 60 + 70, so a high 3rd to drop 10 spots in the 2nd round

Your suggestion (est):

Edmonton trades 50 for 60 + 144, so a 5th to drop 10 spots in the 2nd round

One of these is not like the others.

Yeah I totally get this point of view. I had assumed that all of the top players would be off of the board by the time the Avs got their pick. I also had assumed that with the 22 draft being as deep as it is (considered deeper than the 2020 draft) that the drop off from 25-50 was not as much as it would be in a normal draft year.

No, you're right and he's wrong. See my response to him above (#17). And Holland has a history of trading down, so I think this proposal has a high chance of going through. Well done!

That's only your wishful thinking. When was the last time Ken Holland traded a 1st for a goalie or drafted a goalie in the first round? It's not in his DNA.

Thank you for that link, I was basing my offers based on recent memory of draft day trades lol. Like I said to someone above I don't even pay attention to Pharrow anymore as he just simply trolls almost everything I post.

*Edit*

Looking at the link you gave me the Avs trade looks better than the Avs fans have made it out to be because in 2015 the Leafs traded the 29th pick overall for the 34th and 88th pick so a 1st for a 2nd + 3rd. My evaluation of moving from 25-31 for 2 seconds is much better value than that,

It's well and good to list those trades like that, but what you're forgetting is that all those trades were made based on specific circumstances where a GM/scouts were targeting a specific player who they moved up for. You won't find teams trading draft picks like this outside of draft day because they would only make trades like this based on who is available at the other picks they're receiving. In short, it's extremely hypothetical to the point that it's not really worth fantasising about. Trades involving players are far more tangible.
