Description
The Cole- Pateryn trade is so minor it doesn’t matter. Let’s be honest they both aren’t great. But what does matter is the Avs get cap space to build up other areas at the TDL.

I really hope the Avalanche don’t make that trade.
A third line rental for:
Donskoi
Foudy-basically a third
2021 3rd
2022 4th
Is it just me or is that a lot to give up for a rental.

When you’re a cup contender it’s not bad. Donskoi basically cancels out, he’s just a cap dup and Jenner is better. The other parts are just sweeteners. Probably an overlay value wise but it takes quite a bit to get a guy like Jenner in my opinion.

Namestnikov was traded for a 4th
Jenner is better than Namestnikov
So maybe like a 3rd and a didler for some retention

Possibly. But when you think about would you rather have a 3C who will increase your chances at a cup or some mid round picks who won’t play in the NHL for 4-5 years (If at all)

I'm not sure about the value in this particular trade but if the Avalanche can use the extra cap space to acquire an impact player that will help their cup run this season than I would say the move makes sense for them.

I do like Jenner - would slot in well between Nuke and Compher (who is better at wing). Seems fairly steep a price, though. Maybe Donny, Helleson (who's stock rose quite a bit at the WJC) and that 3rd?

As a CBJ fan I would do this in a heartbeat, but I am also a Boone hater and most people in our fan base would probably be reluctant. I do think that would be a great deal for CBJ though.

That's an overpay for Jenner IMHO.

Jenner isn't a rental; he's signed until 2022.

Nonetheless, it does feel like a lot to give up, but when you break it down it's not that bad. Maybe remove one of the picks and it's fair.

First off, C > RW.

Secondly, Donskoi isn't a good fit on this Avs team, as he's too much of a east-to-west skater rather than north-to-south. Getting out of his $3.9m x 3 year contract has value in and of itself.

Foudy is valued more than a 3rd imo. Many fans and scouts thought he could push for the late 1st round even. His skating and athleticism make him a perfect fit for the Avs style, but you have to give to get so it's fair.

Two draft picks seems unnecessary. Just make it Donskoi + Foudy + 4th and it is probably ok.

It's important to remember that the onus would be on Colorado to get this trade done. Columbus have no incentive to move Jenner right now as he's signed for another season after this one, so a small overpay is probably necessary.

With the Avs poor drafting outside of the 1st round in the last decade I think those picks are often better spent on trades than wasted on the draft floor.

Namestnikov was a pending UFA, and Ottawa moved him at the last second on deadline day which contributed to them not getting a great return for him.

By contrast Jenner is signed until 2022, so Columbus will be under no pressure or rush to trade him. You've got to pay a little extra to get it done probably.

A package of Donskoi + Helleson + 3rd is actually worse for Colorado than moving Donskoi + Foudy + 3rd + 4th.

Essentially, Helleson > Foudy + 4th. At least imo.

Helleson looked great at the WJC and is our prime candidate to replace Johnson as our shutdown RHD. Foudy fits the style of the Avs team really well due to his skating, but he's a bit further away from making an impact than Helleson.

There's also draft pedigree to consider, with Helleson going 47th and Foudy going 75th. Obviously draft position isn't essential to a player making it in the NHL, but this matters to NHL GM's.

I could totally respect the opposite opinion though. Foudy is a really good prospect and if someone rates him above Helleson even after the WJC then that's fine too.

That was my thought process behind the value in this trade.

Not that I necessarily hate him, he's looked a lot better since they put him back at wing. I just get annoyed watching him in the regular season sometimes because he (and Foligno) struggle to keep up sometimes. He's a beast in the playoffs, though.
