Cap Flexibility

Description
I believe one of the $10M/YR players must be dealt to balance the lineup out. Matthews is the player I would least like dealt but is probably the easiest and most sought after.

Horrid trade for Leafs with Arizona. Arizona can't take that cap anyway. You trade a high cap player with almost any team, an equal amount of cap is coming back.
Who even wants Spezza, Hmjarlsson, Bogosian next season?

For a team that has arguably the most 3C's in the league, why, exactly, would we want another?

Maybe instead of the two prospects, a higher-end one would make more sense. If not there are other players that have never come close to a point a game in the league.

Arizona can easily take the cap hit, as the trade is completed next off-season. The Leafs definitely aren't getting the best player, although the prospect package and cap relief help. Had the Leafs not made a terrible FA signing with Tavares and over-paid Marner this would be moot.

Hjalmarsson is a vast improvement on Holl defensively. He's elite at blocking shots and would help the PK. Spezza has been fantastic in a limited roll, and if he's willing to be a part-time player he's worth league minimum. Bogosian can be replaced with a number of cheap veterans for depth. It's moronic to have a prospect sitting in the press box for the majority of the year though.

We don't really need wingers. If we make a trade it has to be for a top 6 center, ideally a 1C. In general the Wild and the Leafs aren't good trading partners. I could maybe see the Leafs getting a 2nd at the deadline for Kerfoot but it won't be from the Wild.

Tavares wasn't a terrible UFA signing....that was the going rate, although I can be open for debate whether the Leafs should have made the signing
Where the Leafs did mess up their cap, was overpay Matthews, Nylander and Marner a total of 4.5m when comparables are made for at the time.
If Hammer is so good....Arizona can keep him. As a Leaf fan, I will keep the dependable Holl and Dermot for a total of 3m or so

The biggest obstacle playing "pretend" GM is not having real scouts to give you in-depth reports on other teams for organizational needs! lol

I can get behind everything you have here Palhal except Dermott. So far I have been completely disappointed in his play. I am looking for a message to be sent to him. Time to shape up or ship out. Kid has potential.
However contrary to all my other posts. Nylander has been playing excellent. Look I’m even calling him by his real name....

You brought the press box into the conversation, as that's where Bogosian is slotted - as a healthy scratch, depth defencemen filling out a 23 man roster. The type of player is usually not the source of heated debate. Chance are, as Leaf fans, we're going to watch one of Dermott/Holl go in the expansion draft.

Nylander was by far and away the best Pts:Salary ratio player of the big four last season. He's on pace to easily repeat that. He's definitely not our cap issue.

Wow, glad people can change (kinda unusual on this site). I was kinda down on Nylander till last season. One problem with Dermot he has played with 3 poor partners in past two seasons and now Bogosian.
He doesn't get maya points cause he never sees the PP. I think he is the 5th best Dman the Leafs have, but until someone is better than him, he can't be replaced.

I agree Matthews shouldn't be in the cards, I just see it impossible to move Tavares and much harder to move Marner. If push came to shove, I also see it easier to resign Marner. I just honestly see it impossible to roster the balanced lineup you need to win with three players making north of $10M up front. The Covid impact on the cap did us no favours.

I really hope to see the trio of Russians together - at least for a little while!!

a number of teams would be interested in JT and MM (who, last I check, are both tied for the league lead in scoring so far this year). Not that we need to move any of them. This is awful for Toronto. You don't give away your best player, a top 23 year old top 5 center, for that.

I'd say moving Matthews to Arizona should be the right move, but you could get a lot more return. He is gonna walk to them as soon as his deal'
    s up anyways.

Nobody will trade for Tavares and Marner will not get full value back.

Not only did Dubas give a 27-year-old Tavares a 7 year deal at $11M per, but he also gave him a full no movement. I believe Matthews would be in far greater demand than Marner. I also mentioned that I believe it will be easier to resign Marner. It is not out of the realm that Matthews, an American, may elect to play closer to home. His insistence on signing a shorter deal, becoming a UFA quicker, certainly doesn't alleviate that concern.

Whether Arizona would add more to that is possible. There are two highly touted prospects. A goalie, under contract, that seems to have put it together. And a physical former first-round player.

I'm a Leafs fan in Alberta, so I have lots of Oilers and Flames friends. I know those two teams probably better than any other after the Leafs. As an Oilers fan, I'm sure you understand the importance of balance in the lineup. Luckily for you, the dynamic duo are not the cap issue at all.

I like Marner as well, just wasn't too happy with the contract demand. I've developed a soft spot for Nylander though. He gets undeservedly **** on in that market.
