Description
Hi Flames fans, Rangers fan coming in peace.

With RD Nils Lundkvist probably coming over to NA next season, I'm expecting TDA to be traded at the deadline. I thought Calgary could be a good fit for him because you can plug him in as your 2RD and then move Nesterov back to 3LD and Tanev to 3RD.

I know Valimaki is an exciting prospect for you guys, but DeAngelo is a proven and reliable "offensive defenceman" if you will. On top of that, I think he'd help you organize your defensive pairs for reasons I mentioned above.

Let me know your thoughts and good luck this season! I got Markstrom on my fantasy team so thank you for his shutout

How about we treat Valimaki like he’s untouchable (because he is) and go from there 😐

For starters, completely different styles of players. Secondly Hughes was not not the #1 last year, that was Edler. And as for Makar, yeah fringe #1 last year would be a good way to describe him.

But he's not "yet"

He might be the best defenseman on the Rangers but Detroit might be the only other team in the league where he is considered the best defenseman if there

SJS - EK is above him (saying he only if he is injured is an excuse)
CHI - I could see it but idk if he's at Keith's level yet
ARI - Below Chychrun and OEL
WPG - Morrissey?
EDM - Klefbom would be above him. Maybe Bear too, hard to say with those 2
NJD - Debatable but sure

Even if he is #1 on all those teams that is still below average

Not an excuse, EK is noticeably worse when injured, and hes better then OEL chychrun and klefbom

All 3 of them were top 20 defencemen if you ask me and the many others I’ve had this discussion with, so

Your list was accurate, imo. I'd possibly even add a few more teams. That hinges on the assumption that Fox can repeat or better his performance from last year, of course.

Fox was not top 20 last year, the other 2 probably were. But being top 20 for 1 season does not make you a #1 instantly.

If you get your information from Pronman you're always going to be wrong. He is not a good source at all.

I find his rankings and analysis to be informative. Him and Wheeler do a nice job on the athletic. Do they miss some guys? Sure, everyone does, but all in all I think they do a solid job. Do you have any reason why you think he’s not a good source?

Fox was awesome last year, but he did so in limited minutes- I don’t think he even cracked 20 a game. To be a true number one you need to log big minutes and be effective in those minutes- fox was effective, but I want to see a larger workload. Just my two cents.

Wheeler is great, Pronman is not. Pronman's rankings are way too volatile and he seems to change the criteria on a whim. Some players get judged based off of what they've done recently, and some can't seem to rise or drop no matter what they do.

He doesn't watch all of these players any more than some of us do. He watches the large tournaments like the WJC, and he may catch games here and there, but he's not some profoundly knowledgeable professional by any means. He got a job at The Athletic, good for him, but that doesn't make him the best at what he does.

@Caerii not that this changes anything I’ve previously said about rankings or Valimaki’s value, but Brannstrom is 28 on Wheeler’s list (a list that excludes full time NHLers) whereas Valimaki barely missed his top 50

I don't know that I ever took exception to putting Brannstrom above Valimaki, and maybe I didn't express it correctly, but I was just pointing out that Pronman isn't a viable source for this kind of stuff. I'm very high on Brannstrom as well. I have no horse in this race when it comes to Valimaki vs. Deangelo vs. Brannstrom vs. Fox, only opinions like everyone else.

Trust me it'll be easier than you expect considering that Tampa Bay was able to move him after that juniors incident, which was way worse than his 2020 controversies.

Not denying that he's very poor defensively but he's one of the best offensive defencemen (one dimensional) like I said in the description. For a contending team such as Calgary, he'll draw interest.

And while I couldn't agree more he was absolutely cancerous on Twitter, he's been just fine in our locker room throughout his whole time in New York.

What happened in juniors?

Whatever it was, I’m assuming the Yotes thought that they’d be able to fix the issue, since he was a young guy. As of now, everyone knows how terrible of a person DeAngelo is, he’s made it blatantly obvious by broadcasting his personality & opinions over the internet. And maybe I’m wrong, but I’d like to think that NHL teams care enough about people that they wouldn’t want to bring in someone like him. But maybe I’m wrong, and there are more terrible people in management than I would have hoped.

We wouldn’t trade Valimaki for Mark Stone lol, there’s not a chance he gets moved for ADA even if we ignored his serious character flaws, Stone’s obviously a much better and more impactful player that actually fills a major need for Calgary. Transitioning to him as a person, we’ve got a bunch of high character young guys like Tkachuk/Bennett/Dube/Pelletier that are establishing a positive locker room environment with the support of vets like Gio/Tanev/Backlund/Lucic. ADA goes against that culture. I really don’t see him as a fit. We’ll be fine with Andersson/Gio running the power plays and Valimaki hopefully stepping up as well (plus Hanifin’s a pretty damn good fallback option).

Hard no. Valimaki is almost as untouchable as Tkachuk. He just hasn't been around the last 2 szns because of injuries. He'll be in gios spot in no time, provided he stays healthy

I'm not really sure where this whole Mark Stone thing just came from, but to give you perspective, I would trade a package of Kaapo Kakko AND a 1st for him. And that's WITH assumption Kakko fulfills his draft pedigree.
Anyway, I'll cut back the pushing for Valimaki since he's clearly that important to you guys.

He dropped a slur at a teammate, and then his father boasted that he "uses those same slurs Tony dropped every day." (here's a video link: https://twitter.com/DrewMacFarlane/status/1267657558350856192?s=20 )

Comparing that to his awful takes about Covid, masks, crying over the election, etc, I'd say that incident overtops his 2020 controversies big time.

Flames were a frontrunner for Stone when he got dealt. Valimaki was a non-starter so Ottawa moved onto Vegas cuz they were willing to lose Brannstrom. And did you mean you’d give up Kakko+1st for ADA?!? Because you’re out of your damn mind if you think that’s his real value.

okay good lol and yeah ofc, he’s on a long term deal now rather than expiring (although he doesn’t seem like the type to be too fussy about where he plays as long as he gets that big deal). The fact that his value was ever a top D prospect + 2nd is absurd for what he brings, still one of my fave players. Been waiting for him to get that C (called it the second the trade happened lol, probably gonna buy a VGK jersey at some point). Anyway yeah that’s off topic but yeah, Stone’s great and I’m still sad Ottawa didn’t keep him and failing that, Calgary didn’t get him
