Description
1- man that third line has been DYNAMITE this year so far. I think they’re going to be very solid. I don’t have any concerns there
2- malkin / letang / guenztal all need to be better and get going. This will happen though. They are all elite players. I’m not worried about them yet.
3- Jarry. He’s gotta be a lot better. All he has to be is league average and they will be fine.
4- kap will help the first line. All he needs to be is a passenger there. Guenztal/Crosby will carry the line and he’ll be very solid riding shotgun with those two. He’s got the speed to keep up and create open ice
5- Matheson/Ceci: I’m more optimistic about Matheson than ceci. He’s good at moving the puck, but so mistake prone. Hopefully he gets better as the season goes on and becomes more comfortable in pits system. I’d play Him with ruhwedel.

Overall I’m not worried. Pens were the better team both games (look at money puck and natural state trick). Jarry needs to be just leauge average, their stars need to get going (ie malkin, Letang; Guenztal). Even though it’s an 0-2 Start there are definitely some positives to talk about. I think they will be fine.

Yes I agree the Pens have been an excellent possession driving team. They just need better goaltending & for Geno/Jake to show up.

I don't put it all on Jarry. Their defense has been horrifically bad. Pair that with a great Flyers attack and he's been hung out to dry

its weird how Toronto and Pittsburgh have managed to create 2 amazing 3rd lines yet one of there top lines is struggling. In Penguins case Malkin and in Torontos case Matthews

with no pre-season it sort of makes sense but for the coaches its time to whip these boyz into shape

Yeah their D hasn’t been great aside from Marino. Need to make better decisions. I have higher expectations for Reirden.

Yup. Once their stars get going, both teams will be fine

In Toronto's case it's easy to explain. They put a 41 year old man on the left wing and have expected him to keep up with Marner and Matthews lol

thorton actually was playing well and gave the 2 boys so many opportunities to score but Marner cant aim and Matthews honestly looked so disinterested

Same case as the pens, once the stars get going, they’ll both be fine (provided jarry can be league average)

Thornton is an anchor on that line. He has no business being on the ice for 18 minutes a night. Like 6 tops. He's slow as hell.

5- Matheson/Ceci: I’m more optimistic about Matheson than ceci. He’s good at moving the puck, but so mistake prone. Hopefully he gets better as the season goes on and becomes more comfortable in pits system. I’d play Him with ruhwedel.

Ceci, belongs in the AHL. Ruhwedel belongs there with him. Neither of these two is gonna help him. If this team is going to thrive, not just survive they need to play Mansicalco. He is without a doubt their best hope of turning that 3rd pairing into something useful.
This team can't keep taking the....they're young so they can't play.....approach. It's not helping them. They have answer, they need to play them. I'd rather go down in flames playing and developing the youth than watching guys who clearly aren't going to help win games.

Ruhwedel is absolutely solid as a #6D. As josh yohe said in his article in the athletic “Ruhwedel took a bad tripping penalty in the first period. However, I felt like he was pretty solid the rest of the way. He’s a dependable player, and if he’s your No. 6 defenseman, that’s perfectly fine.”

1st, the Athletic is awful.

2nd, he's a 7th guy at best. You can't put a 7th guy next to a guy who needs support. Chad is the guy you put in that the guy next to him has to go....how can I help chad out without screwing up my own game.
That isn't what you put next to Matheson and expect results.

That's why they started him next to Marino. Because Marino is capable of carrying someone.
Maniscalco is capable of being so much more than Chad. He can move the puck better, skate better, and has a much larger physical presence.
They need to use that. It also helps reinforce the point to Matheson that he needs to "stay home" and not wander. My god. do his feet move all over the ice. He's as bad as Jack Johnson on that. Chasing guys all over the ice. Like wtf. 101, stay home, help your goalie.

It is what it is. If Ruhwedel was worth anything he wouldn't still be a 7th guy on the penguins on a league min deal. Someone would have picked him up and played him. But he's not. That part is clear all over the ice.
