2019 MTL 4th to SJS for 2020 SJS 4th
2020 SJS 4th to BUF for Marco Scandella
Marco Scandella to STL for 2020 STL 2nd and 2021 STL 4th
2020 STL 2nd to TBL for 2021 TBL 2nd and 2020 TBL 4th

Selected:
2021 TBL 2nd: Oliver Kapanen
2021 STL 4th: William Trudeau
2020 TBL 2nd: Sean Farrell

Quoting: Kotkaniemi15
They also turned Zach Redmond into Dmitri Kostenko.

Zach Redmond signed as a UFA.
Zach Redmond traded to BUF for Nicolas Deslauriers.
Nicolas Deslauriers traded to ANA for 2020 ANA 4th.
2020 ANA 4th traded to SJS for 2021 WSH 3rd.
2021 WSH 3rd used to select Dmitri Kostenko.

The Montreal Canadiens are trying to find someone to step into Shea Weber’s spot in the lineup. You won’t be able to replace him, but the Habs are going to be fishing for a right-shot defenceman.

Two pending free agents they will be in on are Dougie Hamilton and David Savard. I reported earlier in the week that Montreal has already kicked the tires on Hamilton, who was given permission to speak with other teams ahead of July 28, but I’m not sure if they give him between $7 million and $8 million per season on a long-term contract, even if that would be a swap of Weber’s deal.

The Habs had interest in Savard before the Lightning acquired him mid-season and I expect them to circle back this week once the free agent doors swing open.

Both players are the radars of a lot of teams, including New Jersey and Colorado.

Meanwhile, the Canadiens haven’t closed the door on Phillip Danault, but they’re going to explore all of their options. In addition to bolster the blueline, the Habs want to add a top-six forward and not necessarily a centre.

As I reported this week, they’ve gone back and forth with Buffalo about Eichel, but I’m not convinced they have ‘la voglia’ (the want or desire) to get it done by giving up the package the Sabres want. Jesperi Kotkaniemi would be part of the mix, but neither Cole Caufield nor Nick Suzuki are up for grabs. If the Habs want an upgrade at centre, do they focus on Evgeny Kuznetsov instead?

This is Dave Pagnotta’s section on the habs in his latest article.

The D stuff makes sense. Not being willing to give Dougie $7 or $8 million on a long-term deal is really disappointing, since he’s worth at least that if not more, and if they aren’t willing to pay him that much they aren’t going to land him.

Savard would be fine, at a decent number. I have a feeling he might get overpaid this summer, and I wouldn’t be willing to give up any more than $3 million per year.

The “not necessarily a centre” portion is perplexing. Are they really going to go with Suzuki, Kotkaniemi, and Evans as their top 3 next year?

The Eichel stuff is interesting. Good thing they’re not willing to give up Suzuki or Caufield. Doesn’t sound like they’re super interested in Eichel.

Kuznetsov is an interesting option, although I wonder what the cost would be.

Some indider except Ovi signs 10m for 3-4 years, that means WASH needs to clear salary. It could be Kuznetsov. Plus they have 4 RD, MTL could get one from them

I’m not questioning Kuznetsov’s availability, I’m just wondering what a trade for him would look like. What would the Caps want in return?

And yeah, Schultz or Jensen could make sense depending on how free agency goes for us.

QOs were given to Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Artturi Lehkonen, Michael Pezzetta, Michael McNiven, Otto Leskinen, and Ryan Poehling.

I’m not surprised Pezzetta is returning, but I’m mildly surprised it’s on an NHL contract. He’s a great character guy, plays physical, and he has great hair.

The habs retain Leskinen’s rights despite him signing a 2 year contract in the KHL.

Michael McNiven is mildly surprising, given the signing of Kevin Bureau-Poulin to a one-way AHL deal. I guess that means that Bureau-Poulin will just make an AHL salary while playing in the ECHL next year.

Not qualified is Joseph Blandisi. He was one of Laval’s best players last year, but I assume he’ll sign in Europe for more money next year.

He’s not exactly a credible source, and this is especially fishy considering the habs aren’t allowed to talk to them about their interest in joining the team at all yet, never mind the money.

Anyways, regarding the possibility of signing them, Savard is a good #5D, although I really hope the habs don’t overpay him. Paquette is fine as a depth forward on league minimum that can be an extra or play for the Rocket.

Anyways, if Savard is the best D the habs add this off-season and Paquette is the best C, the habs are in real trouble. But if Savard can play 3rd pair with Romanov and Paquette can be the 14th forward then we’re doing ok.

So with the 3 rumored player, what would be MTL situation?

Let's say
Savard at 3.75 x4 (Larsson, but with a cup, but older)
Paquette 1 x1
Wideman 1.5 x1

Lehko+Armia for 5m, Perry 1m & KK for 2.5m
with Price on IR not LTIR

That would be 6,4m free cap 22/ minus 600k overages bonus & 1.5m potential bonus
= 4,4m ish to play with

We don’t have to consider the potential performance bonuses. Since Weber is on LTIR, they’re guaranteed to be overages. So there’s another $1.4 million to add to the cap space.

Also Price likely won’t miss any time, and Armia coming back is less likely than he doesn’t come back at this point.

Fully agree with this, Armia won’t come back, hopefully MB can address our needs in the best way possible and not try to fix a hole with unreliable duck tape

Nice! He’ll be a good 7th D, and he makes Kulak expendable.

And I’m assuming that Wideman will take #6, which will be weird and sad to see as someone other than Shea Weber.

I don't know if he really makes Kulak expendable. He had plenty of looks in the NHL and was below average. Keep both and make an internal competition.

Just keep him away from any Uber, Taxi, Bixi and whatever

Well I guess it depends who we sign, but trading Kulak could free up the cap space to improve the team. But if they don’t/can’t use the cap space well, of course they might as well keep Kulak.

Wideman is not the type of acquisition that leads to subsequent moves, he's not bouncing anyone out and will start at the bottom of the depth chart. It'd take at least two top 6 defensemen to make Kulak truly expendable

My point is that now we have a cheap NHL-quality 7th D-man, which we didn’t have after we lost Fleury. Obviously this is under the assumption that the habs acquire 2 D to play in the top 6, because that’s a necessity for this off-season. Kulak would be slotted in as the 7th D, and a cheaper Wideman as the 8th D makes him expendable.

You do realize that Paquette is a good 4th line forward. He played on the Tampa team that won the cup in 2020. Not like he's a healthy scratch or anything. More like 11th/12th forward than 14th

He’s not playing ahead of Evans, and he’s definitely not playing ahead of any of our wingers. If the habs don’t add another top 6 centre then I guess he’d be in the top 12, but then we have a completely different issue.
