It's high for a backup. And sending Nurse to CLB to get him is LUDICROUS.

Who are you protecting in expansion? Don't get why Seattle takes Kassian

Nuge will make $8 max... He isnt going to get better and on any other team he wouldn't drive his own line.

What would you trade nurse for? I think a first round pick and a decent goaltender would be good for a 1 year contract? I personally think the oilers need more picks not more players. it's the high quality players on long term team friendly and bridge deals that are going to build a stanley cup dynasty under the cap system not some hotshot winger who scores 30 goals.

Klefbom it is. He's EDM's best D. Just injured.

And EDM will absolutely protect him.

I agree that's what he will make on average. We can't just pay him that over 7-8 years otherwise there is no cap left to resign Mcdavid and Drai. If you pay him more next year when we can afford it hopefully you can pay him less down the road and sign him to a shorter contract with an extension where his AAV is lower.

Klefbom has potentially career ending arthritis in his shoulder and only plays 60/82 games on a good year this has been a 5 year thing. i get the sentiment but Caleb Jones is a solid player who skates well and transitions the puck up ice well he's perfect for the new play style of the NHL and on a great contract. it actually hurts edmonton having klefbom in there in and out with injuries constantly because he makes enough to screw up the cap and they can't have a legit replacement in there long term. Part of them probably hopes he gets picked but I don't think seattle would take the chance on him.

I don't think Oilers can afford giving Klefbom away for free. Injury prone or not, EDM defense sucks royally and Klefbom is the best D of the team.

Also his contract is relatively cheap, when compared to other D-men of his level.

I personally think they'll protect 4 F and 4 D. McDavid, Draisaitl, Yamamoto, Puljujärvi, Klefbom, Nurse, Bear, Jones and naturally Koskinen.

Naturally if this current injury of his is a career ending one, it'll change the facts. But nothing really points out to that. He's taking a year out just because of that he can fully recover.

Columbus isn’t moving a 1st for a 2nd pair LHD when we already have one in Gavrikov.

Nothing else in the package is even close to being something Columbus would be interested in either, they decline this easily.

Benson and lennstrom aren't nothing. They can be put into the NHL lineup right now. Edmonton just has too many D prospects and too many forwards.

Edmonton has taken years to find a 3rd line center I don't think they will entertain the idea of losing Turris. Kahun has also come in and brought instant chemistry solving the problem at LW. The thing that changes everything is Jones coming in and blowing the doors off everything. klefbom's contract hinders them from resigning Jones and you can't even move it because of his injury history. The other thing is they can likely get an exemption for klefbom Due to him missing a year and his injury history.

There will be cap. When McDavid and Drai are due for new contracts this team could look totally different but you are moving out cap guys then. Here is my breakdown based on guys hitting their potential

GONE: Kelf, Neal, Khaira, Miko, Smith, Kassian
Core: McDavid, Nuge, Drai, Bouchard, Broberg, Bear
Fringe: Yamo, JP, Kahun, nurse, Jones

Ideally your bottom 6 and bottom D is being refilled by the draft. The core should be steady and drive the team. Fringe guys can be traded to filling roster or continue to build

An example of Nashville's D. Weber was traded and replaced by Josi

Pretty much this. I honestly like the idea of Nurse. But he has never been a starter in the league for an extended period of time. He seems to do a decent job filling in for the starter when he's down, but never really steals the show.

I am not an overly huge Nurse fan, but like it or not, he is the Oilers best dman with Klefbom out. You don't trade that for a backup goalie and a pick. Oilers don't need picks, they need impact players on good deals. I get that you can flip picks for those types of players, but that just complicates the process. Nurse will be players 25 mins a night, given that you have a sophmore in Jones and 3rd pairing Russell behind him on the left side.

This trade straight up makes zero sense for the Oilers

The rule for exemption is under 27 games in one year or 54 games in two year time span. He played 62 last year, meaning he's no exempt from getting picked.

EDM has to pick which one they want to keep, Jones, Kahun or Turris. Naturally they can also try to convince Seattle to take someone else and compensate it with other assets, such as prospects...but I can't see any reality where EDM leaves Klefbom on the table, no matter the injury history. The only way it happens is if Klefbom truly is permanently out or there's a major setback in his recovery process. Which seems unlikely. And if that's the case, naturally SEA won't be picking the guy.

I don't really get why EDM would move Klefbom's contract in the first place. Best case scenario, you get your best D back, worst case scenario, he ends up in LTIR for good and won't affect your cap.

Did you just project 3 different contracts for Nuge? When has that happened in the history of the league? Nuge will in all likelihood sign one long term deal in the $7M range. This projection is extremely, unnecessarily specific haha

I've run through a lot of scenarios and they are always about 5 million short for signing those 2 when you put the fringes on bridge deals and the young defencemen on team friendly long term deals. If the cap were to go up to 86 million by then there wouldn't be an issue but we have to assume it will be flat then.
