Description
We might need to try to go back to the UFA pool to try to get someone else. After the 4th line our depth drops off real quick.

We can’t afford to do that, since they would have to stay on the roster. If they could afford that, then Perry wouldn’t be on waivers.

We could have afforded Perry at 700k instead of 750k, that what's bugging me. Seems like him in the taxi was the plan all along

Isnt there a rule about cap space during season that is getting bigger the more free cap space you have during the first half of the season? Can't find that rule here, but having 700k free could be justified by that

We would have $2.8 million in deadline cap space assuming no injuries. However, the $700K will likely be at least mostly taken up by KK, Suzuki, & Romanov’s performs bonuses.

Thanks! link to a calculator? or explaination of this rule?

Essentially you accrue cap space every day during the season. By halfway through the season (assuming you’ve made no roster moves), you will have accrued cap space for 1/2 of the days, which means you can add cap hits that are essentially doubled for the rest of the season.

Since the trade deadline falls roughly 3 quarters into the season, the amount of cap flexibility you have is 4x as much as the start of the year. So $700K x 4 = $2.8M

However all of this gets a bit more complicated when teams have injuries and are calling up or sending down players during the year. For example, even though the habs ended up with about $4.5 million in cap space last year, they had so many injuries in early January that their daily cap hit actually exceeded the $81.5 million salary cap:

Everyone assumes so but he was a free agent until New Years Eve so why would he magically garner so much attention since the last 12 days?
Also CBA should've clearly included a clause about contract signed this offseason cause it makes no sense for every taxi squad kind of player that got a one year deal where they wanted to get claimed a week later.

That doesn't mean Perry was willing to sign with every team in the league. You're acting like we have 100% proof that Perry had nothing and jumped on the 1st offer he received.

Actually, wrong. There are always two sides to a signing. Apparently, Ottawa had high interest in him and now they can get him for free

The fact that Perry was good in the playoffs and that he was a habs fan growing up points to the fact that there were likely other teams interested. Unfortunately this stuff happens, like last year Luca Sbisa was signed by Anaheim, and then picked off waivers by Winnipeg the next day.

The fact that taxi squads exist wasn’t responsible for Perry being put on waivers, the fact that we’re so close to the cap was.
