Listen there are many reasons to be optimistic about this team. That doesn't change whether you like what hes done or dislike whats hes done.
Am I happy with this teams chances? Yes.
Are there things he did that are puzzling? Yes.
To answer some questions above:
-Anderson had all the power in his negotiation even after a terrible year. Anderson would have only signed a 1 or 7 year contract. Nothing else. Either lose him in 1 year or gamble that he'll be good for at least 5 of those 7 years. MB gambled. No we wait and see. Critics will complain either way. 1 year would have been stupid especially if he had a 27 goal year again. 7 years seems too long based on what WE saw but MB has physicians at his disposal. If they told him Andersons legs and arms are hanging on by a thread, he wouldn't have signed him for 7 years.
- The Habs UFA signings, while right now on paper make them better, they are IMO not very smart signings. He spent money on 3 positions that in theory he could have had for cheaper, has already depth at, forces a player into an odd role, etc.
Make no mistake about it, MBs signings are less about adding the right guy at the right time and more about taking advantage of the market by using his spending ability to sign UFA's who in a normal year would have probably based on previous years, signed elsewhere. Signing these guys made him and Montreal look good. Its a positive for sure but a slightly double edged sword positive. Toffoli was not a need. Edmunston was not a need. Allen was a need but given the goalie market, MB had TONS of goalies he could have signed for a fraction of the price.
After seeing how well the Habs did in the playoffs, he gambled at going quasi "all in" this year because he knows if the team had another 24th place finish this year he could very well be finally fired.
