Description
As a habs fan, I am confused and quite possibly bamboozled by the fact that I have no complains about this team... I'm trying to find a way to be angry at MB, or to create a trade. I just can't!

What is going on.

No point complaining 'til the puck drops. After that, I'm sure (Like every other teams fanbases), there'll be something to complain about. Heck, some Leafers are complaining about training camp lines tears of joy

We will see who is a mushy team at the end of the season. This team is going to be anything but mushy.

The Dcore is mean, and we have great forward depth which will be relentless.

I have a few complaints with the offseason

1. Domi trade, why did we give up a 3rd and Domi and only get Anderson back valuewise Domi was worth more.
2. Why did Anderson get such a big contract for so long? He should have been signed for 1 year at 2-3 Mil to prove his shoulder was fine before giving him that deal.
3. Edmundson signing, why didn't MB try to fill our 1 LD hole instead of signing another 2nd or 3rd pairing guy?

1. It was a bidding market for Anderson, and Montreal needed a big winger way more than a 4th top 6 center.
2. Because if he signed a 1-2 year contract he would become a UFA, so MB signed him long term and UFA years cost a lot.
3. One name: Alexander Romanov

So I don't know that all of these answers are fact but I'll give you what I've heard from different (credible) sources from twitter:
1) Many teams were interested in Anderson, so the 3rd is a sweeter to like outbid the opponent, also they had so many picks the last few years that it doesn't really matter.
2) Anderson was looking for 1 years or 7 years nothing else. So if you get him the one year deal: he might walk at the end of the year or you might have to give him more money for his next contract. With a longer contract he is a cost controlled asset.
3) It's harder and more expensive to get a #1 LD, I also think that he think romanov can take over that spot in 2 years, so he might have not seen the use in bring in someone in the short term when he knows the issue can be filled in house.

I would have rather had nate schmidt instead of edmundson but it is what it is. I hope this helps and answers your question!

Even if @HabsFuture and @HabsFan77 gave out perfectly good answers, I will add a comment.

Your questions can be summarized by: Why didnt he do BETTER moves?.. Well, because he could not.

Bergy should only be judged on his actions, and all those made the team better (except if Edmundson become the new Alzner).

I don't disagree that the team got better my issue comes from Domi should have had more value than Anderson, also the length of Anderson's contract without any reassurances that his shoulder is 100% is an issue. As long as MB made a physical as a condition of the trade I am ok with the contract as it has some risk but higher reward. As for the LHD situation, He gave Edmundson 3.5 Mil and if he had only given Anderson a 1 year prove it contract at 2.5 Mil he would have had 5 Mil+ to work with there were a number of LHD available in that price range. I get that only locking Anderson in for 1 year would have been a risk but so is locking him up for 7 years. I am hopeful that once the season starts Romanov will progress enough to push Edmundson down the lineup cause that will alleviate some of the concern.

I'm almost 100% sure they made sure that his shoulder wasn't going to be an issue and that it is healed. So I also thought that Domi, in general, had more value and would fetch a bigger fish but clearly Gm's around the league didn't feel his value was that high. They traded someone they weren't going to use down the middle for a big, speedy, goal scoring winger and thats the way you kinda need to look at the trade.

So who's the LHD that you would have signed with the 5 mil+ dollars to work with? Or with that extra cap would you have trade from someone else? It's less risk locking him to 7 years tbh and here is why, that type of player will always be an attractive asset to other GMs, as the cap increases (I know there's a flat cap for some years but just follow my logic) it will become a smaller portion of the cap and less of an issue. I think Edmundson will be an underrated add, I know his advanced stats in Carolina weren't the best but he has hinted that he was uncomfortable in the system they play and that he was more comfortable in the system St Louis and Montreal play.

I probably would have preferred to trade for another LHD than sign one of the other FA's. For instance Dunn was probably available for a while until Steen retired and the Blues were able to get some cap relief. He was an RFA but the price to acquire him probably wasn't that high. I think maybe a 2nd and 3rd would have probably done it or maybe Guhle and a 3rd something like that. I am however willing to wait and see how the season goes before making any other moves at the deadline.

Listen there are many reasons to be optimistic about this team. That doesn't change whether you like what hes done or dislike whats hes done.

Am I happy with this teams chances? Yes.
Are there things he did that are puzzling? Yes.

To answer some questions above:

-Anderson had all the power in his negotiation even after a terrible year. Anderson would have only signed a 1 or 7 year contract. Nothing else. Either lose him in 1 year or gamble that he'll be good for at least 5 of those 7 years. MB gambled. No we wait and see. Critics will complain either way. 1 year would have been stupid especially if he had a 27 goal year again. 7 years seems too long based on what WE saw but MB has physicians at his disposal. If they told him Andersons legs and arms are hanging on by a thread, he wouldn't have signed him for 7 years.

- The Habs UFA signings, while right now on paper make them better, they are IMO not very smart signings. He spent money on 3 positions that in theory he could have had for cheaper, has already depth at, forces a player into an odd role, etc.
Make no mistake about it, MBs signings are less about adding the right guy at the right time and more about taking advantage of the market by using his spending ability to sign UFA's who in a normal year would have probably based on previous years, signed elsewhere. Signing these guys made him and Montreal look good. Its a positive for sure but a slightly double edged sword positive. Toffoli was not a need. Edmunston was not a need. Allen was a need but given the goalie market, MB had TONS of goalies he could have signed for a fraction of the price.

After seeing how well the Habs did in the playoffs, he gambled at going quasi "all in" this year because he knows if the team had another 24th place finish this year he could very well be finally fired.
