a Pending UFA, a cap dump that you would need to pay to move, a fringe nhler and some picks, what do you think?

Winnipeg declines pretty easily: they give up the best player in the deal and aren't getting much back out of it. GMJR might consider it if he skips his round of old-folks meds before he picks up the phone, but it's entirely on a whim. With a clear mind, I don't think a mid-late second bridges the gap in upside between the younger McCann and Kassian.

Who plays defense for Edmonton if you trade Larsson? That's a team poised for a 7-6 final every night, in either team's favour.

Thats not really the point. If you want to send sh** in a trade, you can expect one back. And if you actually look at it, the pieces in my trade are more valuable than yours.

Agree.

The Pens counter with Tanev, 2nd for Yamamoto

Your counter trade, and mine, have about the same value relationship as the original trades above. Just reversed.

Thats not even close in the WPG trade. Laine, despite some inconsistent stretches, is an elite goal scorer whos still very young. If he were ever traded, the Jets would need some young, team controlled, top 6 forwards top pairing dmen.

I love Larsson, but he's a bottom pairing PK guy.
Neal is fine, but slightly overpaid and realistically a 3rd/4th line guy at the tail end of his career.
Nygard really doesn't have any value. Has yet to prove he's an NHL regular.
Then two picks that are in likely to fall in the last 1/3 of their respective rounds. Those picks are no where near a sure thing. And likely not having an NHL impact for another 3-5 years IF they turn out.

When you lay it out like this, as early as 2 years, the Jets could have traded Laine and have nothing on their roster to show for it. Laine is way too good for that.

That doesn't even consider the fact that you are dumping tons of salary to the Jets too. This trade is a no brainer for the Oilers, zero risk and all the payoff. Thats why the Jets don't even remotely consider it

Elite goal scorer? Goal scorer for sure, but when someone is 3rd in goals on just his own team each of the last two seasons... elite?

Oilers pass on that jets trade. Larsson is incredibly important for Edmonton also liane would just be causing a massive cap problem in the nearer future without solving anything. Oilers had the top two point leaders last year just added a bunch of quality help in secondary scoring putting the puck in the net is not a problem that needs to be addressed like this.

I mean anyone can hand pick stats. You say he was 3rd on his team each of the last 2 seasons, I could say he's top 10 in the league in total goals since he entered the league. To be in that company in your first 4 years is pretty impressive. Guys been on pace for over 30 every season of his career.

Like I said, he's had inconsistent stretches, especially over the last two seasons, but there aren'y many players like him in the world. Any team in the league would be happy to have them.

You can't seriously say that the trade proposal is fair though. The only real value the Oilers give up is Larsson and the 1st. Larsson, as much as I like him, is very easily replaceable. Theres players like him every year that sign for cheap in free agency.( ie Hamonic) . And as I mentioned, the picks will be late in their rounds, give the Jets just a chance of landing an NHL player, let alone a player with the impact that Laine gives. On top of this, the Oilers get out of Neals contract.

Im an Oilers fan, I take this deal 11 times out of 10. Im just trying to be realistic

Interesting perspective. While I agree Larsson is a great PK guy and a better teammate, what he brings can easily be replaced. Look at a player like Hamonic. Good stay at home vet and held out until getitng a late PTO (I know its likely he has a deal agreed upon already). And if anything, Hamonic has a little better puck moving ability. If you have the chance to make this trade, you take it and give Hamonic a guaranteed deal.

I get that the Oilers already have the top 2 point scorers in the league, but Laine is an incredible talent. You could argue that top 6 wingers is where the Oilers have the least depth/adequacy.

So I agree the Oilers have absolutey no reason to pursue a Laine trade, as they have other areas that need an upgrade, BUT if the proposal above is the case, you take it 100% of the time. The Oilers simply give up no valuable pieces. Theres practically no risk.

Not an important part, but an added bonus is the effect it could have on Puljujarvi.

Nuge-McD-Kass
Kahun-Drai-Yamo
Laine-Turris-JP
Chaisson-Haas-Archibald

Thats a pretty deep top 9. And don't even get me started on the powerplay.

Anything short of 100% success rate would be a shock.

I wouldn’t do larsson for liane straight up. To me this isn’t about value of players obviously liane worth more given age and potential no debate there. This is about wanting to win now and which player better suits the oilers for the now. I know guys like larsson get treated like a dime a dozen or pond scum which baffles me. Healthy he’s far better at what the oilers need from him then Hamonic every day of the week. Oilers need someone able to clear the lanes for Kosk play heavy pin guys to the boards so jones or whoever can retrieve pucks to start the break outs. Those are far more pressing needs than improving an already stacked pp. another point worth mentioning with the pp is liane would change the way oilers strategize pp which given the success rate last season not sure that’s an area of the game want the team focusing on changing that’s going to eat up additional practice time which is already going to be more limited than normal so more than ever the saying don’t fix what isn’t broken applies. On top of all that then consider future subtractions this would cause given salary cap and his next contract. If things work out as well as you suggest on pp can/would we resign nuge? Almost guaranteed no so I personally want nothing to do with liane. Nothing against him as a player just see being a disaster in the short term and long term.
