Yay more 20/20 hindsight draft arguments incoming

Every team passed on Aho in the first round, Pavelski in the 6th/7th... Cirelli went 72nd overall. so your point is every team sucks at drafting I guess..

It's just a million times worse when you have 3 picks in a row an would have been a million times better off to select literally the 3 next players taken. Looks so much worse. SO, SO much.

Go to a mock draft of 2015 and look at how half the league passed on most of the player and at how a ton of players who went in the late first/ 2nd/ 3rd rounds all jump up a ton of spots.

Drafting is imperfect there’s a reason why “lottery draft” could basically apply to the entire draft as a rename

Those guys were projected to go around those areas though, In this specific draft Boston went off the board with all 3 picks. Barzal. Chabot and Connor were all highly touted and good prospects. Only Debrusk was even close to being ranked with them when Boston went off the board.

Barzal was also rated to be a great top 10 pick and he wasn’t. So my point still stands. Every team could see themselves drafting Barzal in the future. I wish we drafted Barzal yet we got Meier who’s great. It is what it is. Many teams passed on Barzal. The leafs passed on Barzal and twice on Aho (selected dermott over Aho within 1 selection). The sharks did the same. A majority of the league did the same.

Drafting just so everyone here knows doesn’t involve magic balls from the future. Just incase anyone thought terracards and magic balls work for scouts and gms. Yes off the board blows up in your face sometimes but just as many times it doesn’t - Dubois was considered off the board yet it was smart (obviously not off the board by a mile but it still wasn’t expected).

Live in the present not the past lol.

I think the bruins would like having Chabot and Barzal but I think they would like to keep DeBrusk over Connor

I mean connors a mile ahead so I doubt that but once again I doubt the GM’s lose sleep over it still.

Not really. Zboril was ranked at #10-20 and Chabot was right there with 5+/- spots. Senyshyn was off the board, Barzal was the miss.

Unfortunately. Been done to death though. And does not matter.

Only pick that was a big reach was Senyshyn. Only one i’m upset with.

They tried trading up for Hanifin/Werenski/Provorov. That would have been a mistake too had they drafted wisely.

When you go off board and it fails there is backlash. Nobody gives the front office crap when they stay on board and the player busts. It’s the players fault in the fans eyes.

I don’t mind when a GM goes after a player they really like. But i cringe when Donny starts doing it. Senyshyn, Frederic, Axel Anderson, Mason Lohrei. Been pretty rough.

I read an article that the bruins are actually the best drafting team over the last 20 years or so. They just absolutely whiffed the 2015 first round.

It’s like any other team. Stay on the board you’ll be fine. Go off it’s a risk.

They get to much flak for 2015 and to much credit for Pasta falling into their laps.

They do ok getting NHL talent after round 1. Which is really where your scouting dept comes into play.

Take the best two players available and then maybe gamble with the third pick

Two gambles was too much. Now if they panned out better, we all think, wow, what great gambles. The broadcasters were confused then, the fans are left with what might have been.

So let’s take a deeper pick ignoring 20/20 hindsight.

Boston was going to take a wing and a d man for sure with those picks.

Wing - Debrusk. Top wings on the board Conner, Boesser, Koneckny, Debrusk, the other Svechnikov, Paul Biitner. The difference between them was marginal. It comes down to preference. They liked Debrusk’s speed. There are a couple of fails there. Botson got a solid contributor that has averaged 25 goals per 82.

D - Zboril. Top d men on the board. Chabot, Zboril, Gabriel Carlsson, Jeremy Roy, Brandon Carlo, Jacob Larsson, Noah Juulsen, Kylington. Chabot was an offensive d man with serious defensive deficiencies. Zboril was ranked evenly with him, teammate, polar opposite, a shutdown d with minimal offense. They had Krug, Zboril seemed a better fit. He’s been buried behind Chara, Krug, Grizz. What do you want? Bench one for him? If he can’t get into the lineup and perform this year then we can call him a bust.

3 - well 🤷🏻‍♂️ With Bergy and Krejci in their prime center was not a priority. Barzal had question marks, health, goal scoring potential. They had 3 picks in the top half of round 2. They could wait on C. They need more wing depth. Here is where they went off the board. And it failed. Seny was rated mid 2nd to mid 3rd. They could have stayed on board and taken Evgeny Svechnikov and failed too. Not an excuse but draft is not an exact science.

For the record i wanted Barzal, Boeeser, Conner there after the top D were off the board and i said it on draft day. Was not happy then, still not. But it is what is is.

There was not two gambles though. Debrusk had a 1st round grade. Zboril and Chabot were the top two D on the board.

I watched it live, and I was paying attention because Ottawa was picking shortly after Boston's three picks. The first pick, Jakub Zboril didn't garner much of a reaction, but the second pick, Jake DeBrusk, was considered early. The third pick however, Zachary Senyshyn, left the broadcasters confused. Looking back at the draft rankings, and using TSN Bob McKenzie's consolidated list;

14) Zboril - drafted 13th
28) DeBrusk - drafted 14th
40) Senyshyn - drafted 15th

So who was available?

9) Barzal
13) Connor
14) Zboril
15) Konecny
16) White
17) Merkley
18) Svechnikov
19) Samsonov
20) Bittner
22) Carlo
23) Eriksson Ek
24) Kylington
25) Chabot
26) Boeser
27) Carlsson
28) DeBrusk
40) Senyshyn

You can't change what happened, no one can, but lets be honest and not use rhetoric to make DeBrusk's pick seem any less of a gamble.

I did not say it was not early. But he was a 1st round grade, was not a gamble. Conner was rated mid teens and Debrusk mid 20s. Not a huge difference. If aGM prefers one over the other for whatever reason. Fine. Svech,Biitner were rated ahead of him. They did not work out so well.

Seny was a head scratcher. The other 2 not so much. Once you get into mid teens to early 2nd the picks are pretty interchangeable in most drafts. Some taken later turn out better than those taken earlier.

I was watching live too. The first 2 picks i was thinking well ok not who i would have gone with but not terrible. Seny....i shut the tv off and went and played golf....grumbling the whole time i was out there.

Do something different. Dazzle me. Go a bit further and take Greenway instead of JFK in the 2nd. He was clearly the better pick at the time, played at the same school. This has been done to death.

DeBrusk was 14 picks early, saying it was still a 1st round projection is rhetoric. What if DeBrusk was taken 1st overall, is that a gamble to you, because he’s still projected to go in the 1st round? The DeBrusk pick was too early, way too early, which makes it a gamble.

If this really bothers you, just tell people the picks went like this;

13th Zboril
14th Carlo
15th DeBrusk
37th Senyshyn

Or just stop thinking about it because you just can’t change it.
