Nothing the Wings could have done this off season would make them "better". Best thing they did was to keep plenty of long term cap available, so in a couple of years they can use that cap effectively in free agency.

Is this really a question? Detroit will be one of the 2 or 3 worst teams in the league.

They need to keep acquiring elite talent via the draft and ride out some of their terrible contracts.

This off-season was an A+

All of the signings were for good value and the Staal trade netted us a 2nd rd pick for an expiring contract. This season was never about winning, it was about setting us up to win in the future.

How could you possibly disagree with Staal or Ryan? Staal was a cap dump for picks, and Ryan is a nice RH shot with absolutely no down side. Seider is not even playing in the NHL this year.

A- offseason, at least.

They did what they intended to do. Add some nhl level depth and tread water another season. Will they be better sure, they'll lose by less than last year but they will still be bad. They just won't be historically bad. Could they have done more well sure.

Added short term depth that can be flipped for futures or used to fulfill expansion draft requirements. Staal can be used and I think they intended to use him based on Yzerman’s comments so we essentially paid 2M (3M cash - 1M replacement) for a second rounder.

They have a nice prospect pool of guys that will be competing for spots the next couple years pushing out some vets. We do need some lottery luck though as no team has dropped more in this current system (ideally in 2022 to get a Wright/Lambert level guy).

This is so true. I love what we have in the pipeline and LOVED Raymond at 4, but it was still a tough pill to swallow not getting one of Byfield or Lafrienere after the season we had last year...

I like Raymond a bunch and out of the picks before us I was higher on Stuetzle than Byfield. I also think Raymond compliments Zadina perfectly and really hope they have great chemistry because that duo would be really fun to watch. Berggren is another guy I was really high on pre-draft and injuries have hurt him a little bit but I like his offensive playmaking but would partner him with a great 2 way center to really compliment him since he lacks in that area (maybe Berniers or Eklund in this draft or Veleno). We really need a stud LD to play with Hronek or Seider as I like Johansson and Wallinder but there is no sure bet they make top 4.

There is no one I would have rather had at 4, than Raymond, so I'm still excited about his potential, just in a draft with Laffy, Byfield and Stutzle in the top 3, it's hard to compete with that. In a weaker draft class, Raymond could have been #1OA, but this draft was a once in a generation talent level draft. As for Berggren, he's tearing it up this season and staying healthy so far, so let's hope that it was just some bad luck and he's back on track, but yea, those injuries are concerning.

I love Wallinder and think he is going to be a beast, but he's probably 3-4 years out, at least, as he needs to grow into his body. I was really high on McIssac and after last years WJC, I had visions of him being a top 2 guy for the next decade plus, but shoulder injuries are no joke and now, I worry that he might not even become an NHLer, which is super disappointing. I'm really hoping we can finally get some good luck and get Luke Hughes in the '21 draft.
