Leafs draft Konecny and dont trade Naz

Description

Purely hypothetical... and yes the back end is trash.
I like Dermott and do believe he is hasn't been given the opportunity to show is value. But man did I cringe when that trade was announced on draft day. Imagine hauling Marner AND Konecny in the same draft?!
Like many, I also didn't initially mind the Naz/Barrie deal. It simply just didn't work out. On paper, it wasnt a bad hockey trade.
I wanted to see what this team could look like if both these transactions were reverted. I think it would make for quite the top 9.
This is as close to the cap I could get it without making any other significant changes.

I remember watching that draft. I saw konecny fall all the way to the leaf pick and I was hyped. Then they traded the pick and then traded it again if I recall correctly. Then I went to sleep as the leafs wasted my time.

You can re-do the draft. Thats what AGM is for.
I chose to create this team based on a more realistic scenario where Konecny was projected to be a top 15 pick and was available for the leafs at 24. It is much tougher to project outside the first round, and im sure every team inside the top 10 would have jumped at both Cirelli and Aho.

this one is a bit more realistic though. Leafs had this pick and then traded It for like a couple of second rounders if I recall correctly.

Even if they did draft konecny though he'd likely be traded for a RHD by now

You're right. The Leafs weren't going draft Konecny but thought they could trade down to 29th and get Dman Larsson. Then the Ducks surprised the Leafs by drafting Larsson, then they Leafs traded down again and picked Dermot.

In your scenario is that Kadri makes 1m more than Kerfoot, and Konecky 4.6m more than Dermot. So who gets dumped for that 5.6m difference....well it's Brodie and more.

Again, this is hypothetical. Take a look at the LTIR- those are the moves I made (or the moves I wouldn't have made) to get as close to cap compliant as possible.

I would one up that. Go back in time and prevent Burke from trading 3 picks that became Saad, Gibson and Rakell. And its ironic as not many people remember that one and its sad as Burke set us back 10 years with both those trades and the kessel trade

Agree with you. Burke set the Leafs back 10 years with due to total incompetence/laziness as GM. He's a great TV personality as he comes off as the godfather of knowledge. But for a guy who had so many high priced executives with MLSE, and unlimited control, he failed to deliver when he actual had the power as a Leaf GM and President. Years after he was fired he still blames the media and the fans for the Leafs poor performance under his tenure.
