Part 2 Hawks rebuild at TDL

Description
Part 2 is to utilize the pending UFAs the best you can. This is obviously a bit of a projection and we have no idea how well Janmark/Soderberg will play this year.

We don't have a crystal ball...so maybe there's salary coming back again??? IDK, but trading the pending UFAs is an absolute must.

TOR Desperate needs 2-way players. Big bodies that can be versatile wing/center and be selfless. They're not cup contenders until they A.) make it past the 1st round and B.) get a team built for playoff hockey. Soderberg helps out a ton.

I think MTL is going to be a big surprise this year. MTL already has a really deep farm system and A LOT of freakin picks. I don't think MB will be afraid to trade away a 3rd for a defensive and physical forward. Quite honestly...it wouldn't even be to win the cup. It would be to help guys like Jesperi/Suzuki/Romanov gain even more and deeper playoff experience.

With a 2 week quarantine mandatory before coming over the border, I doubt you are going to get a good return for anyone going to Canada.

Yeah, maybe. Its certainly a valid point. Do you think that just means trades might happen sooner than the TDL though?

If Toronto wanted Soderberg enough to give up anything of value, they'd have just signed him.

Jesus dude...we're not starting this again. They've currently over the cap and can't sign anyone. Maybe Sodeberg was trying to hold out for more and realized everyone else was signing real cheap...so now that TOR can't sign anyone he settled. Understand the stiuations. Not every player was born to go out of their way to help the Leafs.

Habs are up against cap ceiling they dont have room for a 2m+ player for the bottom 6 plus for a defensive and physical player his -10 career and less than 100 hits over his career add to that his turnover vs takeaways is -21 id call that a bit underwhelming https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/j/janmama02.html

Jesus dude, were not starting this again, if the leafs wanted Soderberg they'd have signed Soderberg instead of the other players they signed. Especially if they were "desperate " for 2 way players like him like you are implying.

Toronto isn't currently over the cap and even then that doesn't stop you from being able to sign people in the offseason. Soderberg's 1 mil aav ask would have been very easy for them to handle this offseason. If you are going to try and act like an expert on this, you should probably have your bases covered.

No doubt it won't stop anyone from signing. TOR can send people down like Sandin / Roberston, sure. The problem is even if you do that...it's still $666k in cap. Which if there was ever an irony it's that there's $666k cap. The TDL also free's up cap space considering how it's calculated on a daily pro-rata basis. I'm not an expert, but certainly bringing more information to this convo than you pretending to do.

So you realize that Söderberg would be replacing someone on that roster right? Who even earning a minimum league salary of $750,000 would make that $666,000 in cap into around $1,416,000. Enough to comfortable fit Söderberg's $1,000,000 AAV and have $416,000 to spare. Basic math here bud, you would have covered this in grade school. Shame the only thing you were able to bring to this convo was a bad idea.

If you could only read it would help... Soderberg had to settle for $1M after realizing everyone else was signing dirt cheap. He was holding out for more....Soderberg signed on Dec 26th.....AFTER all the TOR signings. So unless you're telling guys that you just signed to take a hike...Not happening, then you're just wrong. He'd be added to it.

So you figure he didn't revisit with every team who had had talks with him before signing for only $1,000,000 in Chicago? I don't think you realize how this works. Even if you're right, you arn't but lets go to fantasy land here, ultimately your just showing how Jared was right in that Toronto passed on him. Since we've covered how money wasn't the issue, why would they want him now for the ridiculous price of a 2nd?

Its interesting that you think asking the vets they've signed to sit for games is suddenly an issue. Being an expert on Toronto's cap situation, I figured you noticed there are currently 10 players or so competing for the bottom 6 slots. Why is it the 11th is the issue for you? And where exactly do you think he's going to play after being acquired at the trade deadline? Sitting one of those signed vets for games is an issue at the start of the season for you but it disappears 30ish games in?

For some teams likely but teams that are rolling and had the foresight to sign a pile of depth guys, I imagine they'll stand Pat unless injuries occur.

TOR needed to sign guys like Spezza and Thornton for $700k because TOR didn't have a lot of cap space. They signed on OCTOBER 5th and OCTOBER 16th. Are we good so far?

TOR needed to sign their RFAs like Mikheyev and Dermott and didn't have enough cap space anymore EVEN for $1M of Soderberg. Carl was asking for more, but saw other veterans for REAL cheap and his options are diminishing FAST the more vets sign. Carl settled for $1M. Are we good so far?

As for the vet situation. I actually think you bring up a VERY good point. I can't predict the future. I can't predict whether Thornton will come back and be a Hart winner (exaggeration) or like he should stay in Davos. Carl is a very good 2-way player and TOR needs more of these guys. Spezza ad 37 and Thornton at 41 could be ROUGH. We don't know.

We've covered this already right? How $1 mil only actually requires about $250,000 extra cap space, an amount that always been available and still is.

As for the vets, you've got me confused even trying to agree with me. Is sitting vets an issue or isn't it?

This is actually the best point I've read on this website in a long time. Maybe the typical TDL moves won't happen AT ALL this year because those guys are sitting on the taxi squad? Teams with money like TOR should do their best to fill up the taxi squad with as many veterans as possible.

For Soderberg to entice the Leafs as an option, especially for the cost of a 2nd, he needs to rebound in a big way, imo. I agree with you that the Leafs could use some more 2-way guys, but Soderberg was pretty ass in that regard last season; didn't have a good year defensively at all.

We have...and you're not listening to the timeline. TOR doesn't have $1M today...they haven't had $1M since October 17th due to the RFAs they needed to sign. We good? I'm not sure you're actually reading anything.

I think PBMFMOG brought up a point that no one's brought up. Full up the taxi squad will all the guys TOR needs. Who cares if they sit or not.

Ok, so if we can agree that sitting vets isn't an issue then you've got to realize that Toronto doesn't need $1M for Soderberg anymore right? He's only at most $250,000 more than the guy who he would be replacing on the roster, the guy whos sitting. An amount that Toronto has had available all along.

Price may be a little steep on Soderberg but the idea is to dump him for a pick which I like. I also thin one of Murphy or Zadorov need to be moved. Unless Kieth or Seabs wave they both need to be protected leaving one of zadorov or murphy exposed. I would hate to lose one of them for nothing

Yeah, I think Seabs will waive. I'd even go so far as to sign Seabs to another 1 year league minimum contract for him to waive.

I'm confused at what you're saying. Seabs has 4 years left on the worst contract in the nfl. It's gonna be a steep price to get seattle to take him. What do you mean 1 year league min for him to waive?

I'd extend him to a new contract for another 1 year deal for ~$750k...remove the NMC. Then whenever that year comes waive him and "send him" to rockford, but he will have retired by then. It's essentially paying for him to waive.

I'm not sure 750k is enough for him to drop a NMC unless Toews is seriously hurt/sick and Kane and Kieth are on the Way out too but I get the idea now
