The forward core is fine besides the missing proper true 3c, its the Dcore beside Rielly that is holding them back and should have been the priority fixing. But in general lets say Matthews came in and Lou never signed Marleau the forward core of

JVR-Bozak-Marner
Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Brown-Kadri-Kapenan
Panik-Komorov-Levio

really wouldnt have been that bad

I said it before, I don't think Lou expected the Marleau contract would haunt the Leafs like it did, at the time of signing it, I'm sure no one would have predicted all 5 young guns (Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Kapanen, Johnson) would command nearly 40 million. Of course Dubas didn't help the situation by giving another superstar (J.T.) 11 million before the Marleau contract was off the books and the young guns were locked up.

I never understood why Shanny let intern rookie GM Dubas/Hunter make the Kessel trade, just imagine what Lou could have done with that. I'm sure no 1.2 million retained for 7 years.

They knew what they were getting into. There was an interview with Babcock (it was allegedly an unofficial stipulation in his contract that he got more say in roster personnel than is usual), where he says that when they were deciding whether or not to sign him, they knew the third year would be trouble (duh). 'Math didn't work out' was part of the quote, I believe, yet they decided to sign him anyway. Pretty irresponsible move, imo.

Lou wasn't Leaf GM till after the entry draft. I don't know if the Leaf could have done any better in the Kessel deal. Kessel was no better than an average player late in his Leaf career. Yea sure wish we had that 1.2m in cap space. I liked the Kessel trade and good for Phil he found new life in Pittsburg.

You forgot to highlight the sentence of Dubas not helping the situation by signing another superstar. That's on Dubas not Lou.

You really think the young guns agents didn't smell blood in the water, seeing Dubas fork out 11 million to another superstar.

Dubas messed up.

Certainly Matthews, Marner and Nylander never "commanded" their contracts, when going by any league comparables. For some reason Dubas and the "where was Leaf management?" allowed their young stars to get "hometown premiums"

Kessel was a point per game player for the 3 previous seasons as a Leaf, he still managed 25 goals and 61 points that final season before the trade on the team that hit rock bottom.

Yeah, Dubas sure did **** up by adding an elite Center for zero assets. That was for sure the problem.

I know folks look at goals and assists. He played ALL the PP...great point getters. Little concern for any defensive play at even strength....especially late in his Leaf career. Despite his points he was often the third best forward on his line...behind Bozak and JVR.

It's like you and random have you own Dubas fan Club, go troll elsewhere, he isn't considered a genius by others outsides from the Toronto media.

J.T. leaves the Isles, Lou takes over a team on paper far inferior than the Leaf team he left Dubas.

Lou's Isle's have a better regular season and playoff record than the Leafs.

Cry over those facts.

J.T. is not the superstar you sign for 11 million to win a Cup, Dubas was had.

Same thing goes for the Sharks and E. Karlsson, Cup wannabe's overpay for a UFA superstar only to be disappointed.
