..I don’t think Ottawa needed to do this at all. Don’t see a need for the move and this is costing a 2nd when they’re just helping ARI. Good move for the Yotes, poor choice for the sens - it helps the depth but wasn’t a necessity.
Wait the Sens only got Derek Stepan? The Second rounder went the OTHER way? Am I reading this right? I thought the Coyotes would have to pay to get rid of the guy.
They trade Stephan at the deadline (retain salary) and get more value back is what im guessing
That’s a huge gamble - they’re hoping they can get value out of him and hoping he plays well. He’s a cap dump and will still cost 3m at TDL with retention. I don’t see this working out unless Stepan plays unreal - and it won’t be a top contender due to the cap
Does Dorion actually think the Sens can compete this year? A move like this would make me believe he thinks they aren't going to finish dead last. There isn't any benefits for Ottawa in this trade. Trading futures for a guy who might help them not have a top 3 pick.
That was more or less what I meant though I don't think he'll appreciate his new income tax
May need an accountant to get around the taxes. If he does well he can be shipped off to a number of teams so I don't think he's all that upset about the optics.
Ottawa's ability to evaluate talent at the NHL level is the biggest question mark about this team's ability to build a cup team. They know how to draft and how to develop prospects but at the NHL they don't know what they're doing

players who have struggles on other teams have sometimes shown better success with the Sens. Would not be surprised if he reaches 20 goals with them before the deadline. As for retention because its for a few months they wont care cause its the picks they are after.
Now the Blues have hope to trade Bozak for positive value. Because he isn't owed a lot, and is better at 5v5 in terms. So thank you for setting the market at a good amount.
Whoever voted Ottawa winning this trade, please explain yourself. I'd like to hear that mindset
It wasn't me, but I'll take a crack at it. Seems to me that OTT figures they have an abundance of prospects AND draft capital. So they took a flyer on a guy who has a decent chance of bouncing back and stabilizing their top 6 and probably flip at the deadline for a future asset.
That said, I voted ARI wins this one. They traded a guy who wasn't going to put them over the top and became cap compliant in the process while also getting a 2nd rounder for their trouble. A pick they BADLY need to help keep their prospect pool full.
Ottawa could certainly win this deal if they parlay Stepan into better assets than the late 2nd that they gave up. I got to give Armstrong credit, however, for actually dealing a full cap hit for value!
