Description
The Bs might like their team the way it is. I personally think they’d be fine if healthy. But with UFA values deflated why not add some depth on risk-free deals?

I get wanting to see what you have in the young guys but a contender shouldn’t just hand jobs to prospects without a fight. I also seriously doubt Grzelcyk’s ability to play on the top pair. Vatanen could be great with McAvoy or he could continue to be injury prone in which case the kids still get their play time. Win-win. If Erik Gustafson can sign for one year and $3MM months ago then this is a fair deal for Vatanen.

Similarly, if Anthony Duclair is only worth one year and $1.7MM then Athanasiou might not even cost this much. With injury questions surrounding Marchand and Pasta and still some reliability concerns with Bjork, why not take a shot and add some size and speed?

For the taxi squad, I’m projecting as if there will be an AHL season and you don’t want your top prospects missing out on game action on the taxi squad. I think from the outset you’ll see some younger guys on there but later in the season (when Marchand and Pastrnak are healthy as well) it’ll be a more veteran group. Booth is in there because he’s expendable as what amounts to an EBUG. Vladar is the true next man up.

One interesting question I ask myself whenever I think about the taxi squad and especially in this hypothetical adding Vatanen: do the Bruins move John Moore to the taxi squad? I’ve projected it here. It saves money while keeping him involved. I like Moore more than most but Cassidy won’t play him so where is the risk? If he’s claimed on waivers that’s arguably even better. Especially with Chara as a candidate to come back perhaps later in the year or guys like Ben Hutton, Karl Alzner, and MDZ still available, why not risk Moore?

keep seeing vatanen to the bruins. Just because we lost Krug doesnt mean we want another undersized dman to take his spot. We will be fine without him.

Not saying the Bruins are lucky to have two of top players on LTIR, but it does leave the Bruins the ability to sign some capable UFAs for the season. If the Bruins are healthy come playoff time, they have as much chance to be Cup finalists as any team.

I have serious concerns about the equally undersized and less reliable Grzelcyk taking on a larger role. If there was a bigger defenseman with a natural left shot and Vatanen’s skill or better, I would take him. However that player didn’t really exist on the UFA market this year and the Bs inexplicably passed on Nate Schmidt.

You should see Grz/McAvoy's advanced numbers when they play together. Spoiler, the duo had the best advanced numbers of all the Bruins defensive pairings.

so your solution to having concerns about the undersized grz is to sign another undersized vatanen? if you wanted chara back ide get the whole size aspect but tampa bullied krug, we bullied vatanen. so no i dont want vatanen. i actually think grz is a better player right now than vatanen is anyways.

Fair, but at 5 on 5 grzelcyk was just their best left shot d last season.

Vatanen stinks. So does AA.

Unless there’s a trade for a top pair LD that’s flying under the radar I think the existing roster is what the Bs start with and I’m coming to terms with it. My question is what’s the leash for guys like Zboril, Vaak, Lauzon? Even Gryz as a number 1 pairing. I know that Zboril looked great in Prov last year, but it’s a big ask to have him slot into 20 minutes a night. Same with Vaak (who has had his work ethic questioned by Cassidy). In a normal 82 game season those guys could easily get 20+ games to prove themselves. In a 56 game condensed season, that’s almost 1/2 the schedule.

So is it 15 games? 10? If Boston is 4-6-1 after the 1st couple weeks and the left side is a disaster, what’s planB? Is anyone of any value going to be available in February? How much would they have to overpay to get him?

Starting to get a little nervous is all

Don’t think the bruins are going to enter the season with anyone on LTIR.
