By all accounts when Skalde came to him
7 months after the fact, at the 2019 draft. He took him seriously, assured Skalde that something would be done about it and the situation would be handled. Guerin then took that information straight to the Penguins upper management and within a few days Skalde was meeting with their lawyers in a follow up interview, and by week's end Donatelli was let go.
Guerin did exactly what he said he'd do and kept his word. He absolutely did the right thing, and no lawsuit is implicitly being leveled against him. He was only mentioned in one, which is leveled more against the Penguins for letting Skalde go a year later. They claim Skalde was let go because of Covid reductions, while he says it was because of the assault on his wife and they wanted to get rid of him because of it.
Guerin denies any involvement beyond hearing Skalde's testimony and then taking it to upper management.
However, according to our beat writer. Michael Russo. After Donatelli publicly resigned for 'personal reasons', Guerin did inform Skalde that he had in fact been let go and then
advised he should keep it quiet.
If that's the case, advising someone to keep quiet isn't exactly the same as telling them they
had to keep it quiet. Seems like splitting hairs if you ask me. It might not bring a warm fuzzy feeling to my heart, but I couldn't say I would be surprised in the slightest that they might not want word to get out about it.
Maybe I'm too jaded, or too old enough to realize, in the grand schemes of things, if they did try to keep it quiet. It doesn't really mean much that they did. It's standard practice 101, anyone who thinks differently is incredibly naive. Whether it's a government office/political organization, sports franchise, or large scale business... not a single one would have done anything differently, and in fact, likely most would have done far less if put into the same situation.
Furthermore, while there definitely seems to be some truth to what's been said. Donatelli was let go after all. So there has to be something to it. Skalde's testimony is less than ideal. According to Skalde, he and his wife had just finished having dinner with Donatelli and he had gone to arrange for transportation from the restaurant when Donatelli first started accosting Mrs. Skalde, stopped once Skalde came back, at which point Donatelli insisted that he ride in the back with Mrs. Skalde and Skalde himself sit up front. Once in the car and underway, Donatelli once again accosted Mrs. Skalde while her husband sat up front unaware of what was happening to his wife for the entirety of the trip home. Skalde himself says he was unaware of what transpired until much later.
I don't know about you. But there's a lot there that doesn't make any sense.
1) Maybe it's just me, but unless the guy happens to either be one of two people, either her father or her brother, there's not a chance in hell I would allow or let some other guy sit in the back with my wife while I sit up front. I don't give a damn who they are, never gonna happen.
2) How do you not notice somethings going on back there? Or for that matter, why does she not notify her husband that somethings going on right then and there? He's literally just a few feet away, and she doesn't scream for him to help her?
3) The size of the cojones that Donatelli must of taken to do what he supposedly did, especially with Skalde just a few feet away in the front seat, is unreal.
Look, I don't like making it seem like she's at fault for what happened. Because she's certainly not. That fault lies squarely on Donatelli for being the douchebag he is.
But to sit here and say that the current story as told makes sense and that Guerin's involvement in it, when suspect at best, is reason or cause enough to fire him. Seems like a stretch. Until more comes out, or until some kind of ruling is made. Whether in Skalde's or the Penguins favor, I don't think you can or adequately justify doing so until that happens.
That is of course, just my opinion. And everyone's entitled to theirs too. I also apologize for turning the post into a damn novel. Sorry about that!
