Ever since the Penguins won back to back cups, I’ve noticed that the league has been emphasizing the philosophy of having grit and heaviness. This is evident as all the recent cup champions and teams that make it far in the playoffs have players who are big, physical and relentless on the forecheck. We’ve seen teams that were more or less known for their finesse start to get bigger and tougher, and as a result, they’ve started to significantly improve in the playoffs.

Tampa is an example of this as they brought in the likes of Coleman, Goodrow, Maroon and Bogosian and soon became the most dominant team in the league. Even Toronto, whose GM has been known for believing only in finesse, has brought in several heavy players (Thornton, Simmonds, Vesey and Anderson) this offseason.

Due to this, I’ve decided to ask the hypothetical question of whether a team of grit can beat a team of the most skilled players in a best of 7 series?

**Imagine every player in their prime.**

In order to make team grit, the players need to be big (minimum 6 feet 190 pounds), physical, heavy on the forecheck and dirty areas, and competent defensively.

Team Grit:

Hall - Thornton - Stone
Benn - Getzlaf - Perry
M. Tkachuk - B. Tkachuk - Wheeler
Landeskog - J.Miller - Svechnikov
Pacioretty, Wilson

Chara - Weber
Byfuglien - Doughty
Muzzin - Parayko
Weegar

Rask
Lehner

Team Skill:

Ovechkin - Crosby - Malkin
McDavid - MacKinnon - Kane
Matthews - Tavares - Eichel
Draisaitl - Stamkos - Kucherov
Bergeron, Toews

Hedman - Karlsson
Keith - Pietrangelo
Josi - Theodore
Hamilton

Didn’t you ask this same thing a while back? The team with the last two MVPs on the 4th line is obviously gonna win. Like, this team would maybe drop one game to team grit if they played five bo7 series. This isn’t what is meant by grit helps you win anyway.

My bet would be Team Skill. But wouldn’t that be an awesome series to watch? If I was Team Skill I wouldn’t want the series to go deep (6 or 7 games). If we had the style of refereeing from 10 years ago I would say it would be a coin flip.

Obviously team skill, but that's because the gap in skill is big. When skill levels are close, which is the case with the top half of the NHL, grit brings you over the top

Team Skill.

But the idea that Tom Wilson would be an extra on Team Grit with some of those cupcakes you have at RW is hilarious.

And boy, people must REALLY hate Brad Marchand not to have him there, too.

In this case, team skill.

However, in reality and in the future teams that are built with a combination of size, physicality, grit, speed, and skill will dominate the NHL now and in the future as teams continue to build small and skilled.

Physicality will be more effective than any generations before.

Grit is nice, but you still have to score to win. Goaltending advantage to team skill as well.

Why must poor Jumbo be left out to dry and and lose on another cup run?!?

And I'd take some issue putting Jumbo on team grit instead of skill. He's the greatest passer of all-time in my (biased) opinion, and that takes skill as objectively one of the all-time greats in that category, statistically speaking.

I think what you're saying is that it takes a blend of skill and grit, usually skill on the top lines with gritty bottom lines, and even those gritty bottom lines need skill but I think what you're trying to say is that they need to be skilled AND heavy in the bottom lines.

Dude you have 4 generational talents at forward on team skill to 1 on team grit

Crosby, ovi, Malkin, and McJesus to Jumbo Joe

You have the last two MVPs on the fourth line

The healthy scratches of team skill are as good in their primes as the 2nd line c of team grit and lightyears ahead of 3 and 4

This doesn't ask if skill or grit is more important as the players just aren't comparable.

You're trying to ask if people would rather Marner or Tkachuk but you ended up asking if people would rather Patrick Kane or Callahan. It's not a fair question.

Team Skill would win.
Depending on all those skill players cap hit then I might have to argue that at least half of them should be traded based on being overpaid.

Thanks for answering! Interestingly enough, I customized these 2 rosters on NHL 20, gave everyone their peak ratings & Team Grit won in 5 games.

Yes I agree. If a grit team is much less talented than their opponents, then they will lose nonetheless.

Yes I agree, if the referee was loose like a few years back team grit would have a better chance. They have the guys who are relentless every shift.

Thanks for the feedback. I omitted Oreilly and Couturier from team grit cuz I felt they didn’t play a physical enough game. Everyone else works though.
