Marner trade that makes toronto scary

Description
Toronto saves a ton of cap. Florida gets a winger for barkov to hopefully convince him to stick around, toronto gets a guy to be Rielly’s D partner for hopefully five years.

Florida gets a D prospect to replace Ekblad, Toronto gets a better prospect to replace marner, and even out the value. Please, i don’t want to hear anything out of leafland about how Liljegren is a better prospect than Tippett. He isn’t.

Maybe the leafs can find a way to get Hoffman on a one year deal by moving kerfoot?

As a fan of a team typically in the leafs division, this team scares me a heck of a lot more than the current one.

even if Tippett is better than Lily, he's not ready to play on the second line, let alone replace Marner

Marner for Ekblad and Tippet is already bad for the leafs so you add Timothy... if anything you could get spencer Kngight and ekblad for manner

Nope I agree, the trade seems fair if tippet= liljegren and Ekblad= marner (Toronto saves 3m in cap)

I would say the value is off slightly towards Florida but it’s very close. Couldn’t see either team making these moves.

That is a pretty serious subtraction to their top 6 group, but I do love the idea of Ekblad in blue and white.

Tough call.

This team is just flat out better than the current leafs team. I see no argument to the contrary.

Tippet will be a stud, but like I feel like Robertson will be just as good so that trade doesn't really make a lot of sense imo

Did i miss something where teams can’t have more than one good young winger? Especially when they play different sides.

First, there's no way you can say for certain that Tippett is better than Lijegren at this point. Your claim is just opinion at this point and only time will tell who the better player is at the NHL level.
Second, I think Ekblad would be awesome on the Leafs and potentially one they should seriously consider if the player leaving the leafs is Nylander, not Marner.
Third, the Panthers are having serious cash flow problems and there is absolutely zero chance that they take on Marner's contract. Ekblad is owed $6m next season, 4m in signing bonus and 2m in salary. Marner is owed $15M and 14.3M of that is in signing bonuses. Where do you think the panthers are going to come up with an extra $9M? This doesn't even consider the additional cash flow problems they will have with Marner's contract going forward. If the Panthers trade EKblad to the leafs, they most certainly won't be winning the trade given their cash problems.
Fourth, Hoffman isn't the type of player the Leafs need or want. He's one dimensional and gets the majority of his points on the pp. I'd much rather have Kerfoot at his price who can at least play both ends of the ice and kill penalties.

Toronto is already scary without trading anyone.

Seems like you're suggest exactly that by trying to suggest Marner has to be traded.

I read the first sentence and it frustrated me to the point i stopped reading. I didn’t say which player was better. Tippett is a better prospect. That isn’t a stretch. That isn’t really subjective. Theres a hierarchy of prospects, and some are clearly better than others.

Then i saw the last sentence on my way out. The leafs scare no one. They’re a punching bag. They haven’t done anything ever.

I like the trade. I love Marner but that contract is a burden with their current cap situation and will likely cost them Hyman, Freddy or even Rielly in a couple years. Trading Marner for a decent return + freeing cap space is ideal. You already pay Matthews + Tavares big cash to produce big points, Nylander's deal is very fair- Marner should/would be the one to go.

idk man, tippett in the top 6? that could be an unmitigated disaster, idk if he's ready for that.

ekblad would be great, but not enough to undo the loss of marner

Yup. Can’t pay two centers north of a 11 million, and have a 8 figure winger and expect to have any balance.

Right, both matters of your opinion. My other points regarding the economic issues that panthers are facing, what is your solution to that given the trade you've suggested?

"Florida saves a bunch of cash."

No they don't. Florida pays out 4M more in cash - and a lot of that extra dough happens soon. During this regular season Marner is only owed 700K and Ekblad is owed more (2M), but next summer Marner gets a 9.6M signing bonus (compared to Ekblad's 3M) and so on. No way Florida trades for Marner.

Ekblad would be great for Toronto. Getting out of Marner's contract would be great for Toronto. But other teams will be not be looking to take it on.

Name calling when I contradict your opinion doesn't make you right. Try having a discussion and use some logic or facts rather that just try to bully your opinions into people.

My solution is that the accountants for the florida panthers would actually do the math correctly. Over the course of the contract it costs the panthers $4MM more. I think they can take on an extra 800K a year to get marner.

You’re right. I actually did the math and forgot to change it. I still think taking on an extra 4MM over 5 years is worth it for florida. That top line would be one of the best in the league.

weren't you just saying yesterday that we can't base anything off of AHL production (for liljegren), why are we pencilling a prospect with 7gp in the NHL (2-3 years ago) into the top 6 and assuming he'll be at all adequate and saying the team will be 'scary'

I'm sure he'll be great one day, but asking him to even do half of what marner does seems like a big ask

LOL this is hilarious. Accounting for contracts and paying the actual salaries can be very different. When a company has a huge loss in the previous year and then takes on additional millions in cash commitments for the next season after the owner has outright indicated there's an internal budget would indicate this wouldn't work.
