Description
Set up for failure.
7.7 shooting percentage tied for a career low. Still led the team in quality chances. The contract looks really bad right now, but here’s some context on why he struggled.
The only line that worked well was the Skinner-Larsson-Sheary line. They played really well.
In the beginning Of the year they would put him with Eichel and Reinhart for the start and end of each period, and they scored some goals doing that, but the soccer executive as a coach stopped doing that for some reason.

Sabres management fell in the "trap". They traded for a player with one year on his contract, and then to justify the trade, they decided they had to sign him long term. San Jose did the same thing with Karlsson. Gave up a lot of futures for and then signing him. for 11.m.
Skinner can score, but his overall play is just average. A terrible overpay.

They gave up an ECHL players a 2nd and a 3rd that’s not an overpay.

It was silly to even trade for Skinnner. Sabres with destined to finish out of the playoffs even with his fine season 2018/19. His 9m X 8 years. A terrible overpay by any standards.

I'm obsessing over this topic now and the Sabres in general lol. I'm just going to leave this here:

5v5 goal leaders 2016/17- 2018/19

1. Auston Matthews
2. Connor McDavid
3. Jeff Skinner

How do you not play that with your best C at 5v5?

Update on this.
Skinner started off with Staal and Reinhart. They looked really good according to the camp reports. Played well in the scrimmage. Now he’s playing on the 4th line with Lazar and Sheahan..

My thoughts while reading this:

1st sentence: Yeah, seems like a solid line, I still like Skinner with Eichel though
2nd sentence: Makes sense, Staal and Reinhart are both solid 5v5 players, good compliment to Skinner
3rd sentence: And y'know what, if I'm not mistaken, Reinhart has pretty solid assist #'s at 5v5 and makes a lot of passes that lead to shots; this line really might be something

4th sentence:

I really, really don't understand that. Do you know why he got demoted?

This is what Ralph said today
"It's important no matter your role, no matter your skill level is that in general you play within (our) principles. He's continuing to work on that together with the coaching staff. Once he lets that go and relaxes and trusts his instincts. "... he's going to give us what we need. We need scoring right through the lineup. The present setup will give that line opportunity to add to our offense. It's important for Jeff to just keep working hard and, again, our principles need to be the guideline."
