Description
Set up for failure.
7.7 shooting percentage tied for a career low. Still led the team in quality chances. The contract looks really bad right now, but here’s some context on why he struggled.
The only line that worked well was the Skinner-Larsson-Sheary line. They played really well.
In the beginning Of the year they would put him with Eichel and Reinhart for the start and end of each period, and they scored some goals doing that, but the soccer executive as a coach stopped doing that for some reason.

The sad part is the last game of the season he finally got to play with Eichel and Reinhart.

Yeah, I don't understand that decision. I think Skinner's been too harshly written off due to his contract. He's a prime bounceback candidate regardless of who he plays with imo, but I'd be putting him back with Eichel.

I agree, Hall and Eichel don’t need to play with each other.

The thing now with the Sabres, is that it's pretty tough to go wrong with that top 6. I don't think Hall and Eichel need to play together either, and that's not the direction I would go, but at least now they have enough options that they aren't really forced into anything.

Personally for a top 6, I'd go:

Skinner - Eichel - Olofsson
Hall - Staal - Reinhart

But there are a few serviceable combos in there.

That’s personally what I would do, and I hope buffalo does something like this.

16% of his EV ice time was with Eichel (and 26% of all situations ice time), he just got replaced by Olofsson on the top line and the Sabres didnt have any other good forwards to pair Skinner with. With the Hall and Staal additions BUF will finally have enough top 6 guys to make more than 1 line - Skinner should have a better year but the contract is still bad

I’m afraid by making a get top 6 it’s going to ruin cozens because it sounds like he starting off at RW and I don’t want him to play with Cody Eakin.

Having cozens on the third line will be perfect to ease him in, most teams ease their young c prospects in down the lineup on the wing. Unless they’re like absolute studs like mcdavid LOL. Cozens on the 3rd line to start, see how he plays, let him get some C time in every once and a while. Then next year you move him to 2C and he’ll be ready. That’s the perfect situation. It’ll be the same thing Jets do with Perfetti.

I think starting him in the bottom 6 would be ideal, however I agree with you that maybe the personnel down there isn't the greatest for him. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Sabres aren't done yet...

Why would they not play him with Eichel like they did in 18-19? I know they wanted to bring Olofsson along but Olofsson wasn't particularly amazing with Eichel at 5 on 5 either. In fact when you compare Skinner and Eichel with Olofsson and Eichel, their GF%, CF% and xGF% together were all downgrades from 18-19 to 19-20. You're a Sabres fan, you know that, but it's just so weird. And then they never even tried to put Skinner back with Eichel for a significant period this past season. So strange....

They figured Olofsson needs to be sheltered which is true and they thought Skinner could carry around bad players.

Eakin has a bad year but he rly isn’t that bad. Carolina started Aho off on the wing in the beginning of his NHL career j sayin

I'm obsessing over this topic now and the Sabres in general lol. I'm just going to leave this here:

5v5 goal leaders 2016/17- 2018/19

1. Auston Matthews
2. Connor McDavid
3. Jeff Skinner

How do you not play that with your best C at 5v5?

I dont think theres any debating that skinner produced well with eichel and reinhart. The coach wanted him to drive his own line in year 2, but the gm failed horribly at getting him competent linemates. I believe the coach essentially promised hall he would be playing with eichel in his sales pitch. Olofsson looks like he would be fine playing the right side. Olofsson hopefully takes a step 5v5, we liked to focus on how dangerous he was on the pp, but kinda glossed over the 5v5.

That was something that I really didn't think got talked about enough. Everybody seemed to be hopping on the Olofsson hype train, which is fine, but I think he should be looked at with cautious optimism. I was glad for the Sabres that the contract he signed reflected that view.

It’s crazy Buffalo would have easily made the 24 team playoff if they put Skinner and Eichel together. The most infuriating part is Olofsson in his interview recently after he signed a new contract said he’s more comfortable at RW. So they could of had.
Skinner-Eichel-Olofsson.
Sheary-Johansson-Reinhart.
That’s not a great top 6 but it was better than what they rolled out this year at the start.

Mind boggling. Idk, maybe in the midst of the season Eichel was having they felt justified in leaving Skinner off his wing, but when you look at Skinner's performance, especially with that contract... I don't know how they don't think "okay we've got to get this guy going".
