NYR's needs - IMO nothing, just wants because it is so temporary. I also think ADA could flip and Strome isn't awful NYR's wants - LD for 1 year until Miller, Robertson, Hajek, Rykov are ready, 2C for 1 year until Chytil, Henriksson, Barron and Howden are ready.
VGK's needs - cap space VGK's wants - legit 1C, 1 LD
CGY gets: Pacioretty, Zibanejad, Buchnevich
VGK gets: Gio at 50%
NYR gets: Gaudreau, Monahan, 50% of Gio
CGY fills a need and want
NYR doesn't fill any holes but Gaudreau and Monahan for Zibanejad and Buchnevich is making out like a bandit. They'll have Panarin, Kreider, Lafrieniere, Gaudreau, Kakko, Kravstov, Gauthier, Lemieux on the wing.
VGK fills a need and a want. They also have the flexibility to sign a cheap LW to replace Pacioretty. If need be a pick can be given from NYR or CGY to entice but I really think the most screwed over team here is CGY so no need. CGY should probably get a 2nd
In terms of giving up Gio, CGY shouldn't worry. Valimaki didn't play high level hockey at a good pace from May 2019 to September 2020 and is top 5 in scoring as a defence man in the Finish league. Mackey played at the Flames bubble training camp and looked NHL ready so he'll be good.
I think he's close. We also got Nesterov, Petrovic and maybe Yelesin if things go poorly. Another thing to watch for is Johannes Kinvall, point per game in Sweden
