Canucks don't have the same leverage that they have for Hughes. Petey loves the city and will be worth WAYYY more once the cap starts going back up so makes all the sense in the world to lock him up now. If you sign him for three years, that brings you past the Seattle expansion and TV Deal, and past the flat cap. Petey will also get A LOT better then. Therefore you'll be looking at more than $12.5M. The Matthews contract is a comparable for Pettersson's negotiation and if you want to give him 8 years than he'll ask for more!

If Holtby doesn't get claimed, the Canucks are like $5M over the cap. If you take a bit off Demko and Pettersson you're are probably still at like $2.5M over the cap (Pettersson's price is for sure not dropping significantly enough).

That was a steal of a contract for Edmonton. McDavid should have gotten a max contract at like 5 years, but players are cowards not to ask for that. He is literally the best player in the league.

If you sign a guy to 8 yrs it's partly because you want to save money. We know the cap isn't going up for 3 yrs at least. Only one player in the entire league makes 12.5 cap hit. It's McDavid and he signed that after winning the Art Ross and Hart Trophy. Petey is no where near that level. And if he is in after this season we can revisit offering 12.5 mil. He didn't even lead the Canucks in points last season. The idea of the a bridge to to establish what you have in the player. It's just prudence. You only sign an 8 yr if you think it could save you money in the end. 12.5 is not a savings it would be the highest cap hit in the league.

Although the cap is not rising, inflation for top players will always continue to happen. Matthews is on a 5-year deal and is making $11.6M. This is the precedent for a Calder-winning stud young player playing in a Canadian market. Pettersson has produced better than Matthews over his ELC (pts/game wise)

I will reiterate that the McDavid contract was a steal from the start. He should have signed a max deal.

Even to look at your argument that no player can make more than McDavid, you are looking at somewhere between a $11.6M x 5 years (Matthews) and $12.5M x 8 years (McDavid). That is the least of what Pettersson will get.

Okay then because Mackinnon is the second best player, no one should make more than him... See how that logic fails?

Some players sign deals that just become bargains!

sure, but look at the 3 years of his ELC... at the time he signed he wasn't anything outstanding he signed for what he was worth. you have to look at what a player has accomplished and not only "what they could be" Pettersson will sign a short term deal for 6-9 million with a QO of 10 million or more

Inflation will not be factoring into contracts I can assure of that. If the cap doesn't go up salaries will not go up. The fact that we have already had half a season damaged and another for sure to come should tell you a lot about how much money is being lost. Matthews is a decent comparable but I would argue two things first he was a 1st overall pick and came into the league at 18 and scored and scored way more goals than Pettersson. A better comparison would be Jack Eichel who sign at 10 mil per. In light of covid I think we are going to see Petey sign a bridge deal at less than 10. If he improves again this yr he may get close to Matthews money on an 8 yr. Ideal situation is a bridge though.
