I keep seeing Ryan Reaves trades. Did I miss some news about Vegas not wanting him on their team or something? Why would Vegas take on more cap and still retain on Reaves?
That makes no sense from their end. Also as much as I have respect and appreciation for Thornton's career, I think he's past being a third line C and that's not the role he's being asked to do coming to the team.
I think the plan is for him to play 4th line minutes with second unit pp time. He'll be expected to show his leadership and challenge these young guys when needed. Depending on injuries I could see him spending some time on the 3rd line but going into the season with that as the plan seems like a bad idea to me.

Parayko and Dunn are completely different players. This trade seems to be looking for a shutdown d-man, which Parayko is. Dunn is not.

Marner/Nylander traded for a RD? Check

Interesting that you suggested that "Petan needs a new team". He was placed on waivers and no other NHL team wants him. He's hardly a trade piece...well maybe in the AHL CapFriendly site.

Parayko is one of the best defensively, but Offensively Dunn, and Krug are far superior. But we need our defensive defenseman too. Parayko is our top pairing shutdown guy. But Dunn has some insane stats on both ends of the ice over the past 4 years. It's not just a fluke year. But that's not enough for Colton Parayko. Not even close especially when we just lost Pietrangelo it's gonna cost Toronto a LOT more.

Also put that aside. Dunn plays top players too, just Parayko plays all the top players all the time. But also it depends on who they are with, Dunn does a lot of carrying when he's with Faulk, Bortuzzo he does a lot of the offensive carrying, and when he was with Pietrangelo he didn't really carry Pietrangelo on either side, but he did do very well on both sides of the puck.
