If They Didnt Overpay Marner

Description
For me, the biggest mistake of the Kyle Dubas era will always be the Mitch Marner contract. Even though he is an excellent player, there is no way to justify paying him the same amount as the franchise cornerstones John Tavares and Auston Matthews. With the cap savings from him, the team could've afforded to sign a 2RD and their roster would be unstoppable.

You can't win a cup with Vesey on your team and Barabanov is unproven, so I don't understand why people are putting him on the third line

We get it, you don't like the contract, what's the point of carrying on about it for years?

And especially making ACGMs with a lower contract? It's done, it's not going to change.

Everyone knows marner is overpaid, and you’ve made these posts a million times. Nothing is going to change as mentioned. Is this a fair contract for marner? Yes. But you’ve made the exact same armchair post 15 times now.

I get that this is just hypothetical but Marner is overpaid by such a modest amount that it really has no impact on them winning or losing. Leafs fans should be pretty thankful that we have no really bad contracts, so their fate is decided on how they perform and how the roster is constructed rather than anything financial

call me crazy, but where's the $1.5M in difference here?

again, Holl is so hilariously underrated by leafs fans (even I was guilty of this before). It may have been an anomaly, and we shall see come this season - but good god, he played quite well with Muzzin - and it was his first full year in the NHL not being a healthy scratch

give the guy a chance lol

Even if you think Cernak is better, the difference is so small that it’d have virtually no impact on their season

or, hear me out, if it was ever so simple and literally all they needed was an extra 1.5 million they could have marner at what he is now and not have signed SImmonds.
look at that,

The Leafs got great value out of Marner’s ELC as they watched him pot 157 assists and 224 points in 241 games. He capped the three years off by scoring 94 points in 82 games in a contract year. A huge reason as to why this overpay occurred is because of Marner’s platform year. Using points to evaluate forwards is a bit reductive, but the fact is, points are what get players paid, and Marner had 94 of them.

The Maple Leafs signed John Tavares as an unrestricted free agent in July 2018 to a seven-year contract at an $11M annual cap hit. If they could have signed him for just a little bit less – say, a $10.5M cap hit – that would have not just saved them that money, it also would have set a lower precedent for the other key players that they knew they would need to sign in the near future: Nylander last year, Marner and Auston Matthews this summer.
It’s the Leafs management that they should be angry with, because they set the wheels in motion last year by caving in to the demands of Nylander – a player who hadn’t proven that he is as valuable to the team’s success as Marner now has proven himself to be.
Let’s also remember that the deal the Leafs gave Auston Matthews earlier this year is for five years, with an annual cap hit of over $11.6M. That’s over $700K more than Marner’s cap hit, and Matthews’ deal is one year shorter, meaning he’ll be up for a new contract, presumably with an even higher cap hit, a year before Marner.
And with everything that came out about how Babcock treated him, not getting rookie bonuses like Matthews did, it’s not surprising that he’s camp asked to be paid like JT and Auston.

"The Rangers got great value out of Laffy’s ELC as they watched him pot a boat load of goals and points. He capped the three years off by scoring over a point per game game in a contract year. A huge reason as to why this overpay occurred is because of Laffys platform year. Using points to evaluate forwards is a bit reductive, but the fact is, points are what get players paid, and Laffy had lots of them.

The Rangers signed Artemi Panarin as an unrestricted free agent in July 2019 to a seven-year contract at an $11 642 857M annual cap hit. If they could have signed him for just a little bit less – say, a $10.5M cap hit – that would have not just saved them that money, it also would have set a lower precedent for the other key players that they knew they would need to sign in the near future: Kaako last year, Laffy and buchnevich this summer.
It’s the Rangers management that they should be angry with, because they set the wheels in motion last year by caving in to the demands of Kaako – a player who hadn’t proven that he is as valuable to the team’s success as Laffy now has proven himself to be."

do you see how silly it sounds in other contexts?

Tavares already took a paycut to come to toronto of like 2-3M, why is he taking even less? How does a 28 year old franchise centre signing a deal impact what a 90+ point winger and a 40-50 goal scoring centre ask for? Nylander was and continues to be an elite winger, a play-driving, play-making, sniping winger who takes faceoffs and is damn good at them.

my point being that they don't both make 900K

people seem to think the pay difference is indicative that vesey sucks big time, but 1. kappy wasn't that great when he was here and 2. vesey, despite playing on the worse team in the NHL still put up respectable numbers

would you rather have kappy or vesey, simmonds, thornton, bogosian, anderson, and mikheyev?
