Do you really though? I am going to throw a few names out just to prove a point. Johnsson, Skinner, Drouin and Kovalchuk. When Tampa got Johnsson he was a great scorer that most teams envied now they can't give him away, same with Skinner in Buffalo. Drouin had been in the NHL and was a proven player and Sergachev was only a prospect and look at how that turned out. Finally when Kovalchuk was signed by L.A. they felt he was going to be a key piece going forward then 1.5 years later they terminated his contract and the Habs signed him for league minimum. All of these guys were " proven" players at the NHL level and none of them worked out for their respective teams. It's not just about being proven it is also about team needs and fit within the system.
Yep, proven player bud. Have done it in the NHL. If a player has done it once, they can do it again. It’s not potential anymore.
If a player scores 20 goals in a season. They are a 20 goal scorer. They have done it, proven they can do it. You can’t take that away from them. It’s not a potential 20 goal scorer anymore.
Yes, some players get older and decline and that’s expected to. But that’s not what we are talking about. We are talking about a 24 year old player, with 30 goals plus in the last 3 seasons. You know AROUND what you are gonna get if he stays healthy all year. A prospect, you can say whatever u want, it’s all potential until they prove they can do it in the NHL, on the NHL level, against other NHL players, during a full NHL season.
If it was a sure thing or u knew for sure, you should buy lottery tickets too then. Or you’d have a job in the NHL if u were right more than 50% of the time. People get paid a lot of money to do this and have spent their lives scouting, and still 50% success rate on a young athlete is great!!
