Description
READ description:

This is all hypothetical. I don’t want Toronto to trade either guy and I don’t think they’re gonna any time soon.

Before people say that these trades make no sense or don’t get accepted, that’s not the point. This is primarily to show leafs fans the types of trades I personally think Toronto would make if they ever wanted to trade MM or WM. Nylander is a top 4 D+Top 9 FWD, Marner a top 4 D, Top 9 FWD and second tier prospect. Also, they’d prob want to fill out the other positions in this case hence the FA signings.

Yes, these are prob overpayments on the other teams behalf’s, but that’s the reason they aren’t getting traded, it’d take a big overpayment or a situation where one has to be moved for it to happen.

Again, this is for leafs fans, so Carolina fans, don’t sue me.

And like I said In the description, I’m not trying to move it. They really don’t need to. Also I was not aware the draft lottery already happened for next year, that’s very exciting tho.

I guess I read your preface to this, but I don't get it.
Why would the Wild or any other team pay that for Marner?

How was I supposed to know you meant 3rd round? Im not trying to give you a hard time thats just a random thing for me to have to interpret. But no, the leafs would not have to give up a 3rd to move Marner lol.

I'm not saying Minnesota would, I just am saying that Toronto would have no incentive to move him otherwise. Whether or not his deal is good, he's of huge value to Toronto, so it'd take a super practical roster move for them to move him. Otherwise they'd just make the rest of the roster work around it.

Out of curiosity, and maybe Jets pass cause Marner costs too much, Laine for Marner, does it work and if not what needs adding?

Its hard to make a roster work around 4 players who are making 50 million a year between them. Even if your the leafs and you do up front contracts.

But they've done that, man. Thats the whole purpose of my post, they don't need to trade Marner or Nylander or any top player for that matter. Theres a huge misconception on cap friendly particularly that Marner and Nylander have no value and that Toronto needs to move them. They don't, and they're not going to unless they make a super sensible move similar to the ones I've posted. This offseason proved that they can still have those contracts and improve their team. And that's not exclusive to Toronto, teams can improve even if they have bad or expensive contracts, you just have to be creative.

I think thats just one of those moves that doesn't make sense for either team. Toronto would want Winnipeg to add because they're giving up the better player, Winnipeg would want Toronto to add because Laine probably is more worthy of his cap hit. I think teams are going to start shying away from 1 for 1 star trades, and it'll be more multi player deals that are relatively equal in cap and address each teams need. For example, something like.

Laine, Demelo, Roslovic for Marner, Holl, Kerfoot, 3rd. Idk if the value is fair there but thats just kinda a guess based on needs.

I know this is a hypothetical for Leafs fans, but neither guy returns that much if traded.

I don't necessarily disagree with that, but I think that's why neither have been or will be traded

I personally think it should be for 2-3 forwards, this group isn't deep enough, I think the d has a chance to be good.

I'd agree with that, I think a 2F/1D would be ideal. As much as they get ripped on for their defence, I actually feel like on paper their defensive depth is better than forward depth now. Its team defence that needs work

The Brodie signing set them up pretty well imo and their younger guys could develop so I'd be a bit !ore patient with the, the potential "century" line would have me very concerned come playoffs.

Even then it wouldn't make much sense for the leafs to trade a natural-born playmaker for another goal-scorer when we have AM and JT. Laine just wouldnt be a good fit.

in your premise you say nylander or marner would be traded for gross overpayment or necessity. Well this fits the gross overpayment. what would the necessity trade value be like? cause it would be far less.

It’s too tough to say honestly because that’d prob be a couple years down the line where you’d have more of an idea of what each player is and what the cap situation is

It’s interesting seeing people doing tampa threads right now because Tampa will be making moves out of necessity and the values are all over the place.
