Why would the Flames trade for Hall when his contract is over the next year?

He might leave and we get nothing.

After the Hall trade blew up in Arizona's face, I don't see any team giving that kind of payout for him without a prior commitment to stay.

Its close enough. Why would any team go anywhere near that value after the similar trade just failed so badly?

With Hall's 1 year term, its clear he intends to try free agency again after the economics have changed. Any sort of return will reflect that opposed to Arizona who hoped to re-sign him.

Why are you guys acting like because Arizona is a dumpster fire that it has an indictment on hall? He played good... This is also assuming he's going to rebound with Eichel.

I could change the pieces since Flames overvalue Ryan. Maybe swap Kuznetsov with Kylington too.

Because every single year there's plenty of rentals traded

Its not that we don't think Hall is good. tbh I wish he would be on the Flames. However, its from the deadline to the offseason. And that amount of time is worth nothing. Unless if the Flames are in the first spot of the Canadian division and leading by a lot.

Because GMs don't usually repeat one anothers mistakes in such a short time frame.

That is opinionated, but I agree. Obviously as the seller we hope there is a desperate team like there always is.

Teams trade for “rentals” at the deadline EVERY year

Let's remember that Matt Duchene was traded in back to back seasons for bigger packages then what was proposed here. Columbus lost Duchene after the season. The trade to Ottawa blew up in their face as they ended up trading what ended up being a top 5 pick. Derk Ryan is a rental also and is included just to make the money right.

COL isn’t doing that. Sakic has never traded a 1st and he isn’t going to start by doing it for a bottom 6 rental.

in no way would avs ever pay a 1st for a rental like Staal. Not even they decline this,..it would never even come up as a trade conversations.
Staal doesnt fill a need and at his age, isnt a fit on the avs either

Let's get rid of all of these negative thoughts my friends.
Buffalo will be buyers at the TDL.
They now have 6 solid top six players:
Skinner, Hall, Olofsson, Eichel, Staal, Reinhart and Cozens.
OMW that is actually 7, can you imagine SEVEN on the SABRES.
Mittelstadt, Thompson, and Ruotsalainen will fill out the third line.
Lazar, Girgensons and Okposo and who ever else you want to add to that will make a good fourth line if someone could coach them to kill penalties.

Let me remind everyone, only 9 teams gave up fewer 5 on 5 goals than this much maligned defense.
With a better offense, there will be fewer goals against.
The defense is really young with Miller being the oldest at ONLY 28.
Contrast that with Tampa's defense, only Cernak and Sergachev will be UNDER 30 when the season starts.
Dahlin, Jokiharju, Montour, and yes even Ristolainen will be BETTER next year.

Only 7 GK had a better 5 on 5 SV% than Ullmark and no one had a better SV% on shots beyond 30 feet.

While it is good to have contingency plans, I think we should be spending more time planning for success.

I agree with @gretzkyghosts but to think we are absolute shoe-ins with these new potential divisions and not addressing our D and G at all is just slightly an impetuous mindset

I was assuming they'd make him fit in the top 6 but having him as a 3C makes the team that much stronger.

And then you’re back to my original statement, Sakic has NEVER traded a 1st and the first time he does it isn’t going to be for 36yr old rental that they would have zero interest in re-signing with Newhook and Bowers rolling on to the team in the 21-22. Not ever happening.
