Description
Assuming we make no moves during this upcoming season, have signed Kylington to a 2-year deal.

I figure we make a deal with Seattle to lose Kylington instead of Bennett. What do people think? Do we just say **** it, take the L, and lose Sam?

If I’m Seattle, I’m coming for lucic and the best pick offered, slap the c on for two years in Seattle. He grew up somewhere close and perfect to build an instant rival with canucks. Obviously depends if they think anybody available on cgy going forward looks like a building block.

Why are you paying Seattle to take a decent prospect?

He has to be protected due to a NMC

Seattle is going to have a bevy of defensemen to choose from but are going to be very weak on forwards. It will probably cost a premium to have them pick a defenseman rather than a forward who seems like he could contribute more with a bigger opportunity.

I highly doubt they take Lucic, there will be a lot of teams trying to unload much more enticing cap casualties

Because one (or 2 if Looch doesn't waive)of Mangiapane/Bennett/Dube will have to be exposed and loosing one of them is worse than loosing Kylington

Probably, Calgary decided to respect his NMC when they traded for him, I find it very likely that he agreed to waive for the expansion because of this. Looch is also fairly happy in Calgary and the fans like him too, Seattle's not going to select him so I doubt he would purposely put the team in a more difficult position.

He waived to get to Calgary, I’m sure he would be asked to waive again, if he’s sold as come in be the veteran tough presence, basically in the lineup for two years with the c on. I believe he grew up in Vancouver, so as close as you can get without being a Canuck. Gives Seattle two years to get there drafts underneath them, it probably need a first like det gave Phoenix for datsuyks contract. Also kind of like the hometown type dman that Vegas got from cgy.

Or Seattle could be a playoff team right out of the gate like they probably will be if they dont take on Lucic's contract. There are plenty of tough players that will be exposed. Brendan Lemieux for example

Fair enough, I haven’t looked to close yet into what is going to come available, you think Vegas going to get enough cap cleared to effectively double dip on this expansion too.

If Bennett can show he can play this regular season like the playoffs I would not be surprised if Backlund were left exposed. He will be 32 with 3 more years at $5+M and depending if Lindholm is moved to center may become redundant

As @Ledge_And_Dairy implies, Calgary really has a problem with the expansion draft because even putting Lucic aside, the Flames have 8 forwards (Bennett, Dube and Mangiapane being nos. 6 - 8) and 4 defensemen (Kylington being the 4th) they'd like to protect. And @InTreWeTrust could be right -- rather than expose one of the younger forwards, Treliving might prefer to put Backlund out there.

I think that in this situation, the OP's idea of paying Seattle a third to take a good defense prospect makes a lot of sense.

The problem exists but I don't consider it a major one. Yeah loosing Bennett/Dube would suck but I don't think it will cost an arm and leg to have them choose a slightly lesser young player/prospect in Kylington or Simon.

I think everyone is getting pretty damn excited about Oliver Kylington. Can someone inform me what he has done to warrant this? I understand he has not been any Calgary coaches favourite child, but the guy has some major inabilities in his own end. I think keeping the core of this team together, and paying a 3rd (which we got from a stupid GM 3hrs north) is pretty worthwhile. We also have D prospects I think people are sleeping on (Kinvall, Mackey, Yelesin).

Also, just because Lucic waives to help the team is in no way guaranteeing or even hinting that he'll be selected. The **** would Seattle ever do that for.

The thing with Kylington is his offensive potential is really high, like Gustafsson/DeAngelo level. His defense could definitely use some work though. Sadly he has never really been given a chance on the powerplay. Now that Ward has full control of the team and no leash the hope is he is given a chance to prove himself.
