We should have never signed Tavares

Créé par: TheLeafsSeason
Équipe: 2020-21 Maple Leafs de Toronto
Date de création initiale: 26 nov. 2020
Publié: 26 nov. 2020

Description
Subjective option, but instead of signing Tavares, we could have had: Kadri, Haula, Granlund, and Duclair, with two million in cap space available to sign other free agents or to utilize at the trade deadline.

What team makes a deep playoff run? The current Leafs team or this Leafs team?

so you'd rather give bozak that monstrosity $5Mx3 contract?

Kinda hoping he signs at like 2M with the leafs to fill in at 3C once Kerfoot is drafted by Seattle lol. Always liked Bozie, just not at 5M

For your second point, similarly to when Erik Karlsson was available? The contract is looking good for the Sharks. Regardless, there are two types of players: playoff performers and seasonal performers. Tavares falls under the seasonal performers. Kadri is a playoff performer.

Karlsson had a history of injuries, and was rated purely for his offensive game vs. his poor defensive game. It shouldn't be a shock that he's fallen off (Though the entire Sharks team did as well).

Re: Kadri being a "Playoff performer" vs. Tavares "Falling under the seasonal performers", I'd like to see a relevant stat, metric, or realistic reason why you think that? It seems more like a media driven narrative than the truth.

So we are judging our loss based on a third line centre? Another excuse in Leafs-land. Where were the other guys? Last time I checked, Kadri didn't get suspended in the 2020 playoffs

well, the strategy was play naz as the shutdown guy and then use JT and Matthews against the lower lines. With Naz out, the leafs had to essentially morph JT into a shutdown centre while giving matthews all the responsibility of scoring against a team that eventually went to the cup final.

Goat, kappy, moore, marleau, brown, ennis had 2 goals between them. Nylander was plastered to the third line until babs finally moved him with matthews after not having done it all season

also, taking a 5 min major in a game where the team was down 3-1 with 6 minutes to go probably didn't help

The first season he had after the trade to the Avalanche, he made the playoffs with 18 points generated in 15 games played. The Avalanche will win the cup in the next few years.

Look Tarvares is a very good player he is one of the top 20 centers , but allocating 11+ million dollars to a forward when they had upcoming superstar forwards like Nylander, Mathews and Marner coming of ELCs a year later. His deal also increase the salary for those guys, now you can make the argument that the failure of Dubas was not signing Tarvares but giving Nylander almost 7 million dollars which increased the value of Mathews then gave Marner a winger almost 11 million dollars ( should of been in the 9 millions). Bottom line Dubas should have allocate the cap better to buy a top pairing defensive Dman and round out the bottom six.

Nylander got market value, it had no bearing on Matthews/Marner deal.

Dubas has acquired two $5M+ dmen to compliment the top 4. Even if the Leafs didn't sign Tavares, which $8M sure thing No. 1 dman is falling into their laps over the least couple of years?

IMO Tavares (for nothing but $$) plus Muzzin, Brodie is better than Kadri plus mystery box.

I know what you're saying, but you can't solely base a loss around one player. If we're doing that, then there is a major issue regarding the overall build of this team. Everyone should be playing as a unit but the team didn't. This trade will haunt down the line and will be painful when he raises the cup above his head with the Avalanche when he couldn't do it in Toronto.

Man I hate it when Leafs fans say this. Do you guys realize we wouldn't have saved that money, and would just sign Bozak and JVR to those terrible deals? Personally, I'd rather have Tavares over those two right now.

You can't call a guy a playoff beast, then shrug him off as some 3rd line C in the next breath. Pick a lane here bud!

I love Kadri - but it's not even up for debate his playoff miscues had major negative effect on the Leafs playoff fortunes.

No, clearly if the leafs didn't sign him, everything would have happened in a very specific way and the leafs woild have stood pat until all these other players would scramble to play for them and the leafs would have the best team in the league and tons of cap space, which is way more valuable than good players

maybe the reason he couldn't do it in toronto is because he kept getting suspended when the games mattered

the leafs took the first game from the bruins (2 marner goals, 1 from willy, and 1 from JT, who also had an assist) - Kadri mustered a secondary assist that game

game 2, the leafs were getting hammered but bailed out by freddy. Down 3-0, they score with 9 minutes left, Kadri tips in a goal. 3-1 with 9 minutes left, anything is possible. The next time kadri sets foot on the ice, with 6 minutes left, he takes a 5 minute major and gets himself suspended for the series, boston ties the series.

imagine if they mount a miraculous comeback and go up 2-0 over boston? We'll never know though, because Kadri got suspended for the series smile, second year in a row

I'm worried about his contract when he hits his mid 30's. For the first few years, the contract won't be horrible, but he is not getting any younger.

When you're paying four guys superstar money and expect them to be superstar, Kadri's appearance should be shrugged off as a player who plays a third line centre role. With the Avs, he is an important piece
