Well #1, a 23 year old Malkin had accomplished MUCH more than a 23 year old Matthews. It really isn’t even close. Multiple hart nominees, a scoring title, Stanley cup, conn smyth, Calder, etc.

Jones is clear cut better than werenski. I find werenski overrated. He’s an offensive D propped up by Jones. Getting a #1C in return plus a #1D PLUS a first is a really good deal for Toronto. Sure Matthew’s is better than PLD. But is the gap Jones and a first? Absolutely not

So I get a song and a dance instead of an answer...

It was a simple question that had nothing to do with Matthews vs Malkin.

Used to think the same about werenski till the play in when he was missing. Leafs dominated. That’s not to say it would have went the same if jones were missing.

Personally I would not make this trade. I don’t think dubas would either.

You literally asked about what I would think of a 23 year old Malkin trade and I pointed out it wasn’t a fair comparison since Malkin was significantly better. That’s on you. I answered your question it wasn’t a fair comparison. I bet if you take jones off that team and add werenski in, there would’ve been a different outcome

What is ridiculous are people, de-valuing Leaf players, since they are Leafs. When fans of other teams trade for star pieces from the Leafs, they offer assets that don't hold as much value as the superstar. However, when Leaf fans try to trade for an exceptionally well player, we need to offer a kings ransom. That package gets you Marner, not Matthews.

No one is devaluing Matthew’s here. This is an OVERPAY for his services. And the fact that you’re saying that’s a return for marner? Ridiculous. This is why people don’t like leafs fans. Marner doesn’t get JONES alone, let alone PLD + a first. Keep living in La La Land. I used to like the leafs till I realized how bias their fan base is. Thanks for once again proving my point

I never compared mathews to Malkin, just asked what you would trade him for. I assumed the answer would be there is no reasonable trade.

I would much rather have 5 years of marner Over 2 years of jones. But yeah to say marner gets even pld in a 1 for 1 is debatable. I would side with Columbus on that 1 for 1.

Of course in reality there was no reasonable trade, but just for fantasy purposes, a Malkin trade in 2009 would’ve netted a return that looked something like this.

Idk why you say “two years of jones”. It would be perfectly reasonable for him to resign in TO. It’s very rare TOP free agents leave contending teams (if leafs are contender in 2 years). Only notable one I can think of is Peterangelo.

Because those are the rights being traded. Certainly the leafs or any other team could sign jones in 2 years. The trade is for the next two years of jones. And who knows... it’s still completely possible that this season isn’t played.

You can’t really add value to a trade by saying a team can sign a ufa.

if the leafs retained Jones rights, there is a significantly higher chances he would sign there. That is just factual based off historical evidence of high profile free agents resigning with contenders. My only point iim trying to iterate is that in a vacuum, Jones, PLD, and a first hold more value than Matthews alone.

Is it though? What would you have moved a 23 year old Malkin for?

Disclaimer: I am not infatuated with jones, not only is he not the best Dman in the league he is not even the best Dman on cbj.

he's the pretty good, pretty big distance in skill between him and all of leafs defenseman

Exactly. Comparing this roster to the leafs current roster, I think it’s safe to say this team is better. And they got a first too!

Leaf fans don't care who likes them or not. We love the heat here in Toronto. You're delusional to think this offer gets you Matthews. I was feeling a bit sorry for Penguin fans when they signed Ceci, but not any more. Enjoy that Ceci - Matheson pairing.

Keep chirping the pens cause we’ll still do better than the leafs this season!! Matheson will be a pleasant surprise and Ceci will be a healthy scratch. No issues there! Keep living in La La Land if you seriously think in terms of RAW value this trade is anything less than an overpay by Columbus

Muzzin is better defensively and Rielly is better offensively. My opinion. Sure he is good, in fact I think I said he was great.

From aSJ fan? a 3 asset for 1 trade? Why don’t they just fix their own mess from within?!? The Jackets decline quickly. Jarmo has been building for success now for 5+ years, and it shows. Stop with these stupid posts and draft/develop your own players. stop with these ridiculous trades to save a franchise for what they cannot do with their own drafting, developing and coaching, etc. The Leafs are becoming The biggest joke of the NHL with their poor management and coaching, especially in big game situations.
SJ is not far behind in player/talent and contract mismanagement

Honestly didn't mean to say it should happen one way or another. I just make these proposals from time to time to get discussions rolling about fair value/realistic potential/just for hits and tickles. I really like what the Blue Jackets have done too. They're similar to CAR in that they're building strong foundations from within (I consider Jones "within" since he was traded to the team so early on in his career) much like what SJ did with Vlasic, Pavs, Couture, Braun/Demers (eventually Hertl too later on) in the late 2000s.

Ceci is playing for you guys. If he was sitting, he wouldn't get a $1.25 million contract. Players who sit get league minimum or slightly less than one million

He will start to play sure, but pens will rotate him out with Ruhwedel. Besides, he’ll be on our bottom pairing playing 12 minutes a night. He’ll be fine in a sheltered role. Not like the leafs who played him over 20 mins a night with Reilly.
