It's called a bridge deal. Also, he's not putting up a bunch of points which Is obviously what everyone looks at to judge defenseman apparently. Carlo would be the best defensive defenseman on MTL and TOR. Easily.

It’s fair value. Leafs would be hesitant to move SDA but they feel under Brodie and Holl they could take on a reclamation project. He’s definitely better than Bogosian so he would be playing with Dermott or Sandin on the 3rd
