Description
Vancouver has had a rough offseason that was saved in part due to 1 move, the Nate Schmidt trade, that trade was a steal for Benning. Schmidt is a solid top 4 defensemen capable of playing top pair, but the contract wont exactly age well which is a problem, but for now, he's worth it. The Hawyluck signing was a good depth singing as well, but all of this isn't enough to make up for what they lost, losing Markstrom, Tanev, Toffoli, Stecher, and Levio hurts no matter which way you slice it. Holtby is a downgrade from Markstrom and maybe Demko booms but its still a risk. The team overall didn't improve, they need their youth and young skill to carry them. Vancouver will still be a good team, but whether or not they are a playoff team is in question after everything they lost.

I thought the Canucks did ok under the circumstances. Tyler Toffoli was sacrificed to improve the blueline. They had to make a call on Marky or Demko and they went with the younger guy. It might come back to bite them but in this economy they could shell out money they might not have to kick the can down the road. With Holtby Demko they have a tandem they can ride opposed to a legit no1. Jim Benning's track record with free agency is appalling, the fact that he didn't spend money is amazing.
The Canucks now have a fantastic young core that will be able to compete. This year they need to run out some bad contracts but should still make the post season.

many schools of thought here and here's mine OP, and your slightly off base....

Schmidt will me 33 at the time of his expiry and at $6m he will be fine. Edler/Myers will be 36 and at $6m, those contracts will not age well.
Holtby will be fine, reason for regression is easily searched on google, his goalie coach, KORN, left the on ice job for an office job, then left for the lslanders with Trotz. Those 3 years his numbers went down. Ian Clark, the Cancuks goalie coach is the same level as korn and will turn Holtby around. Some players need that constant coaching. trick is that Clark is re-signed.

Markstrom and Tanev are horrible deals in terms of money and term, Leivo will not be the same player, he was already slow[ish], he will be slower. Toffoli would have been signed if it werent for the covid flat cap era, but at 4 years and the uncertainty of even next year with no fans, what happens if the league says, nope cant do a flat cap, we have to lower the cap, wheres the money for EP/QH, etc?

which leads me to the kids proving themselves. a shorten, compacted schedule is a perfect scenario for Lind, MacEwen, OJ, Rathbone, Rafferty, Hoglander to show what they have, its not writing off the season but it is assessing what they have, who to protect in expansion, who to expose, who gets resigned, and who is worthy of going on this 8+++ year run with Pettersson and Hughes.

All in all the Canucks have come out of this off season not too badly off. Losing some of those guys will hurt in the short term but matching any of those contracts (except Toffoli) would have been extremely painful long term. Holtby/Demko are not too much of a step back and Schmidt will add sorely needed offence from the blueline. Stecher and Leivo are nice depth players but those kind of guys come and go every year on a teams roster....hardly irreplaceable. Toffoli should have been resigned, especially after what we gave up for him, but Bennings poor cap management is to blame for that. Jimbo can't seem to help himself it seems...the whole OEL fiasco underscores that. Even if he had managed to dump Ericksson in that trade AND Arizona retained some cap it would have been another albatross contract to deal with down the road. To me avoiding that "opportunity" was the biggest win. Now we will finally get to see what some of our younger players can bring to the table and the potential contracts for Pettersson and Hughes should (hopefully) stop Benning from adding more ill advised long term contracts.
