But you're not taking on salary (unless you mean the retained salary).
By the way, the leafs likely decline anyway, in my opinion, Dermott is better.

for the record, wilson has 50 points in his last 82 games, meaning he bottoms out the 'all situations' chart and 5v5 he has 33 points, meaning he also bottoms out the other chart

also, he took 36 double minor penalties to nylander's 7. not saying guys like him aren't valuable, but... cmon
not exactly a great deal for the leafs

Agreed on all except Tom Wilson. I think he's one of the players in the league that still has size, grit, toughness and scoring and that's pretty rare now days. I'd say Nylander is the more skilled player but I would personally rather have Wilson than Nylander. I think the caps would reject that trade anyways.

Also Anthanasiou is terrible defensively. Spend that cap on someone else.

But Wilson is much tougher and he hits more. Isn't the whole point of this site to trade Nylander for a worse player that hits more or plays right defence?

Yes, I know ovech he fills more of a need for the leafs, but Nylander is better.

except that Wilson is worse at everything hockey related except "being tougher". worse goal scorer, worse play maker, worse transition player, older etc.

The retained salary makes it so that MTL has $1,574,125 coming on their side and Leafs are taking on $1.15M. MTL gains $424,125 in cap space. They're already over the cap right now

Makes sense. That's why each year the team with the best players on paper wins the cup right? I understand that Nylander is better and I agree. Tom Wilson fills a need the Leafs lack (toughness and grit) without losing a ton of offensive production. He also has won a cup and understands what it takes to compete in the playoffs, something no Leaf has truly shown they can do for years. As a Leafs fan I'm tired of watching the so-called more skilled team get tossed around in the playoffs and not a single player in their top 6 finish a check on an opposing teams dmen.

the moment they get wilson, they're gonna see their top 6 scoring dry up and be like "damn we really need a high flying winger who can score"

getting guys who play like wilson is easy, getting guys who play like nylander is next to impossible (unless you draft or trade the farm for them)

And yet the closest thing the leafs have had to a guy playing like Wilson in the playoffs is Spezza dropping the gloves.

I guess the real issue here isn't that we need Wilson but we need our skill guys to be able to play with some toughness in the playoffs. Not saying we need Matthews to drop the gloves but every player on the roster should be expected to finish a check.

The leafs with the most hits this season were Gauthier, Timashov, Nick Shore and Trevor Moore. Just because guys lay hits doesn't mean they're good lmao. The leafs need to hit more, but the idea of going out and getting bruisers is hilarious to me because it's exactly what Burke tried to do

Matthews and Tavares score a lot, they don't need to hit. Nylander and Marner score a lot, they don't need to hit.

Sidney Crosby was 353rd among forwards in hits this season. Is he a softy who doesn't perform in the playoffs?

Good players play hockey, you reserve the crash and bang role for your bottom 6 and your grinders. The idea that the reason the leafs haven't won is because Matthews isn't channeling his inner Ryan Reaves is hilarious lol. You need guys who hit, they got guys who hit, Mikheyev, Hyman (top 6 players), Vesey, Simmonds, Thornton, Muzzin, Bogosian etc.

If a team is worse with a different player, a need isnt filled. The leafs would be worse with that trade. Wilsons toughness wouldnt make up 1/10th of the gap in contribution

Vessey, Simmonds, Thornton and Bogo are all good signings to address the need. But way too many times in the series against the Blue Jackets did the Leafs wingers curl up on their D. Columbus did no such thing against us. If this group of talented players ever want to win, they will need to start doing the little things needed to compete in the playoffs. I didn't say Matthews needs to channel his inner Reaves.
