Salvaging our bad offseason

Description
1) Larsson shouldn't make the team, but I don't want to speculate on what he can and can't be traded for. If he can be traded for picks, then use that money to sign Ethan Bear longer term. If he must be moved in a hockey trade (Tanner Pearson?), then play the acquired player 3LW, move Ennis to 3RW, then look to trade preferably Kassian if possible, Chiasson if not.

2) Mike Smith isn't an NHL caliber goalie. I don't have the exact list of goalies that need to go on waivers, but I'd bet my life savings that a lot of them will be better than Smith. Claim one of them and move Smith to the minors.

3) I got a lot of high earners in the minors. They aren't NHL level players, and they don't have clauses that force them to stay in the NHL. The NMC is there for a reason, if they don't have it, then they can be moved down for any reason.

Edit:

4) I see the Adam Larsson hive is alive and well. Keep in mind, he has not been traded yet. If everyone insists that a dman who's been outscored 162-121 in the last 3 seasons is a vital part of our team, then we will be fully cap compliant playing him and sending Bouchard to the minors

I'm more of a Larsson fan than most. I would've loved him on the team if we didn't sign Barrie, but that decision has already been made for me.

Larsson gets absolutely zero respect on this site and that blows my mind. Here’s a reality check oilers blueline before larsson zero youth had any hope of success. Oilers blueline with larsson suddenly have later round picks like bear and jones looking fully capable. Idk even costing hall to get larsson id do that move over and over again because of all the stability and long term benefits he’s already provided. I just don’t understand how sooooo few people can connect those dots. People that suggest he sucked even this past year blow me away because in January and February I thought was the best hockey ever seen of him. In my opinion you remove Larsson from this blue line right now your asking for a lottery pick and ignorantly wasting a year or mcdavid and leon.

Depends on how good we are and how good Arizona is at the deadline. I believe Hill goes on waivers at the start of the season, we should claim him. Then if a Raanta trade makes sense, Hill could be the warm body going back

Saying you'd trade Hall for Larsson again is a massive yikes.

Also, if we'd be a lottery team WITHOUT Adam Larsson, then why have we been a lottery team WITH Adam Larsson the last 3 seasons?

What purpose is there sending Neal to Bakersfield? On what planet does it make any sense to send down a guy who is a lock for 20-25 goals with his eyes closed to save what a million dollars? Your not replacing what he provides for any sort of cap savings so why?

If C Jones was a bit better I'd agree with you 100% on Larsson, who handles tough deployment well enough to warrant an NHL spot, but yeah not great 😐

Everything else is superb here and I really like Kahun there due to his very underrated scoring abilities

Would be neat see Larsson swapped for someone

Neal hasn't scored 20 goals since 2018 and Kahun has move 5v5 points this season than Neal does in the last 2 combined.

We were second in the division this past year....
we made the second round of playoffs with larsson on the team we have seen far more consistent lottery picks with hall around. Idk seems like a no brainer to me able to connect the dots of what has worked and has not. Don’t get me wrong I love hall style of play but extremely overrated

Right, our recent success has everything to do with Adam Larsson, and nothing to do with McDavid and Draisaitl. How could I be so stupid?

correlation does not imply causation

We got better because of McDavid and Draisaitl, not because of Adam Larsson

Correlation =/= causation

Wow there's literally zero proof possible that his presence somehow turned those guys into NHLers and it's honestly pretty ridiculous to suggest

Like he's a magic blooming mushroom or something

2 of 10 NHLers come from late round draft picks that noone expected, from Jamie Benn to Kyle Brodziak

It happens and isn't because of x or y necessarily

All on the powerplay. Considering our team was outscored 4-1 without McDavid and Draisaitl on the ice, I'll take Kahun's 5v5 production over Neal's PP production. The powerplay was actually more successful with Chiasson playing net than it was with Neal, so there's literally no reason for James Neal to be on the team

I like Kahun addition but if any of this makes sense to you wow been given ya a lot more credit in the past. This is very close to one of the worst attempts at an oilers roster I’ve seen. Horrible asset management sending down Neal at twice the cost of a buyout. Nothing here works or makes sense. Doing nothing would have had better results than this

While I no longer advocate the extension of Adam Larsson, to discount the role he plays on this team is disingenuous at best: he is Edmonton's strongest defensive option on the blueline and eats a myriad of minutes. There's value in having him paired with Jones for this season: Edmonton's going to be running a very young blueline for the foreseeable future and maximizing how much Adam can pass onto guys like Jones and Bear before he leaves has value. If you trade Larsson, the structure of the blueline as a whole crumbles: you either end up with Bear playing 24+ minutes a night or Russell playing more than 16. I don't think he's by far the most optimal name Edmonton could be employing, but given that there's but a year left on his deal, he's far from being the primary issue this team had last year. A healthy Larsson is a legitimate top-4 option. The only caveat is that he needs to be healthy.

Burying Neal makes no sense at all, short or long-term. You only gain a hair over a million dollars in cap flexibility: fundamentally it makes more sense to bite the bullet on a buyout and take on more cap savings for success now despite the three extra years of his $2M buyout hit. You appear to have tried to find a middle ground, but only found an inferior option. The play is to pay another team to take (at minimum) 50% of his deal or buy him out. Maybe this season, maybe next, but burying him shouldn't be the primary option. Even Montreal saw the light in an Alzner buyout.

Bouchard doesn't need to be in the NHL this season. An extra year of development isn't hurting him.

It's great asset management if anything. Not buying out Neal when we don't have to will shave 1 year off his eventual buyout. And I genuinely don't know where you see the downgrade. Nobody has been moved out, and better players have been brought in. Neal is at best, the 13th F on the roster.
