I'm waiting for the extreme Oiler Fan hate, even though this team is absolutely better than what they currently have.

No extreme hate, definitely better for one season! Then we pay Petterson, Hughes, Hamilton, Yamo, Patrick and probably one of Larsson/Barrie with Klef also back on the books. Impossible to keep even 2/3 of them. I get that its all fun fantasy, but even in a fantasy world would you rather have 4-5 years to try and build a cup winner around McD and Drai, or a one year shot with this bunch before an inevitably worse roster in 2022? I'd take the 4-5 year long shot with the two top league scorers locked in!

A fair while longer because you get 8+ years each of Pettersson/Hughes as opposed to 5/6 of McDraisaitl who I absolutely see leaving EDM as UFAs ultimately

Getting personally questioned when they lose while having to endure the mgmt that makes them lose, ffs

I see this situation going down as historically fraught

*whispers* this is secretly superb

Even the Dougie > RNH upgrade is huge ultimately

Like Dougie almost had a higher point per game rate *as a D* than him last year and didn't play beside two of the best scorers on earth it's kinda bonkers

As I much as I eternally love him Connor McDavid is sketchy defensively and Draisaitl is meh at Corsi

I'd rather see them build properly around 97 but...

Yeah but look, you have four players coming off of ELC. Pettey and Hughes are going to cost somewhere in the 15M range together. Yamo & Nolan probably 5-6M combined. Your number 1 D is walking most likely (Hamilton) and you still have Mike Smith, Mikko Koskinen, James Neal, Zack Kassian on the roster.

Better? In the areas the current Oilers lack yes: Defense, Wingers
Worse? In the areas we were already good at: Superstars, Core stability (big names locked up)
Same? In the areas we wanted to improve on: Still mediocre Goaltending, Offloading overpaid players

Does this even make sense? Absolutely not lol

Don't just say 'wrong' and be a tosser about it

Hughes/EP are less combined than McDraisaitl

They'd have nearly 40M$ for everything next season

Hughes/EP/Yams are 25M$ at very very most and...

Bouchard/Lagesson/Benson/Broberg/Konovalov are all good NHL depth under 1M with Evan likely being a core part of their D very soon indeed, so uh yeah

Sad as it is Nolan isn't looking at a pay day anytime soon with his health, a 6M$ long term commitment requires many full seasons past these issues

Hughes will get $8M, EP probably $9M. That's 80% of the $21M McDavid and Draisaitl make, for inferior players. How do you pay Hamilton, Larsson, Barrie, Yamamoto and Nolan next year, and then Nurse, Couterier and Puljujarvi the year after? Who are your goalies?

Bottom line, this team might be better for the first year, and then you'll have to start trading talent. This AGM is short-term thinking at its finest.

Look I understand it’s the best player in the world coming back the other way, but I can’t see a way the Canucks say yes to this trade

I wouldn't worry about paying Barrie next year. He's gotta prove himself first. Also, remember you do have Broberg, Bouchard & Lagesson coming up soon.

There still isn't enough cap space to make this a "better" team in 2021-22. You've created a 1-hit wonder.

Maybe, but 1 hit wonder and a cup is better than being mediocre for the next decade.

Wow! Two superstars traded in one AGM that's quite something. As long as Ross Johnston & Jujhar Khaira waive their clauses it should hold water I guess.

Vancouver accepts this trade as it will fix our salary cap problem for next year! If we have McDavid at $12.5, we'll save Petey's $9 + Hughes' $7 + BoHo's $5.5...that's $21.5 million total, or a savings of $9 million. I'll use that $9 million to re-sign Sutter, Beagle and Eriksson to longer term deals!
